Summary

Spiders’GreedFall 2: The Dying World, the highly anticipated sequel to its cult-classic old-school RPGGreedFall, is arriving later this year, now placing players in the shoes of a Teer Fradee native who was forced away from their island and moved to the old world continent of Gacane. Set three years before the events of the first game,GreedFall 2promises an “even deeper RPG experience” than before, where players will make new allies whom they can now fully equip and control during combat, and makemeaningful narrative choices asGreedFall 2’s story unfolds.

ThroughoutGreedFall 2’s development, fans have made known their desire for De Sardet, the player character and protagonist ofGreedFall, to make an appearance in the sequel. While it would certainly be exciting to see the beloved character again inGreedFall 2, their cameo would create an unfortunate issue that would need to be addressed first. As players were able to customize De Sardet’s appearance inGreedFall, it would be inconsistent for the sequel’s version to be any different. However, this problem can be avoided with a trick that developer BioWare has used throughout itsMass Effectseries.

Spiders Can Solve the GreedFall 2 De Sardet Problem With a Mass Effect Trick

BioWare has never shied away from allowing its fans to customize the appearance of their characters, and that includes its famedMass Effecttrilogy. Beginning withMass Effect, players could fully customize their version of Commander Shepard and then transfer their custom Shepard from oneMass Effectgame to another. This created consistency across the board when it came to Shepard’s appearance, rather than causing each game to feel disconnected from the rest. Players knew that eachMass Effectgame in the original trilogy would be a continuation of the last, as opposed to a completely separate game, and Shepard’s consistent appearance helped maintain and honor that expectation. As the primary purpose of this feature is to establish one overarching immersive narrative across each installment, it would also serveGreedFall 2well.

How the Custom De Sardet Can Return

If Spiders has chosen tosomehow incorporate De Sardet intoGreedFall 2’s story, even if it is only for a brief cameo, it arguably has little choice but to take a cue from theMass Effectseries and use the custom version of De Sardet that players created in the first game. If players grew accustomed to seeing one version of De Sardet inGreedFall, they would not only be confused by the appearance of an entirely different version in the sequel, but it would likely break immersion in the process. To accomplish this, Spiders would need to designGreedFall 2to read the player’sGreedFallsave file, assuming they are playing the sequel on the same platform they used to play its predecessor.

Why De Sardet’s Return Seems Logical

Spiders could avoid this problem altogether and simply leave De Sardet out of the picture inGreedFall 2. However,GreedFall 2’s story serves as a prequel to the first game, and althoughGreedFallprimarily takes place on the island of Teer Fradee, De Sardet is originally from Serene, the largest city of the Congregation of Merchants and one of Gacane’s most important ports. This means that De Sardet would likely have been around duringGreedFall 2’s story, giving more than enough reason for them to make an appearance in the sequel. Furthermore, it would be disappointing for the character that many grew fond of inGreedFallto never show their face inGreedFall 2, so Spiders is all but obliged to respond in kind.
