Sometime in the next five weeks,Better Call Saulviewers will be seeing the return of the iconicBreaking Badcharacters Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, played respectively by Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. Before the two main characters ofBetter Call Saul’s predecessor come back on the television screen, Cranston and Paul reflected on what went on behind the scenes.
AsBetter Call Saulprepares to wind down, both Cranston and Paul talked about how, because the showrunners wanted to keep their return as in the dark as possible, they went to extra lengths to conceal their involvement in the show. Of course, this was all for naught anyway sinceBetter Call Saulwould announce their returnbefore the final season started.

“We were asked to keep it a secret forever,” Cranston told the Albuquerque Journal. “We were flown in under the darkness of night. We took this plane and they went to a certain private section of the airport there. And then we took like two steps out of the tarmac and into an SUV. They move us to an Airbnb – a duplex. He had the top floor. I had the bottom floor and we were told you can’t leave.” Paul then laughed at how much went into keeping their return a secret all for it to turn out to be a prank. “It’s so funny that because this was supposed to be a big surprise, a big secret,” Paul said. “Then all of a sudden, they announced that we were doing it, so why did they keep us in a prison? Seriously, they were just messing with us.”
Even thoughBetter Call SaulandBreaking Badare hailed as two of the best dramasever made during their respective eras, both shows have some pretty clever comedic material sprinkled during their runs, so it comes as no surprise that the showrunners were committing to a bit with some of their old castmates. With the influence that social media has, one could argue that maybe it wasn’t a prank. Maybe what the showrunners wanted more than anything was to announce on their terms that Cranston and Paul were coming back rather than have some random guy on the internet expose them because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
No matter what their intentions were, it’s apparent that Cranston and Paul jumped at the opportunity to play White and Pinkman again and were willing to do whatever Vince Gilligan and co. required them to do because they were reprising roles that they hold very dearly. Both White and Pinkman are television characters who viewers attached to between 2008 and 2013. To see them again, especially if they reunite with Saul or are potentially seenwith otherBetter Call Saulcharacters, would be quite the spectacle for those who tuned in to both shows since 2008.
But the real question is, what role would they play? The last time viewers heard about either of them, White was confirmed to be dead and Pinkman escaped to Alaska to start a new chapter in his life. Evidently, the series will probably show them either sometime during the pasttimeline ofBetter Call Saulbefore they hired Goodman or will just replay events leading up to when they hired Goodman. Nonetheless, it’s going to be awesome seeing everyone’s favorite meth cook duo back on television.
Better Call Saulwill air its final five episodes on AMC on Mondays at 9:00 p.m. EST.
