All Elite Wrestling held its big Double or Nothing pay-per-view event on Sunday, May 29 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a super-sized show with a huge card and major matches, including MJF vs. Wardlow and “Hangman” Adam Page defending the AEW World Championship againstCM Punk. As always, AEW fans brought all kinds of signs to the event, including one that made a rather bold claim about Nintendo’sSuper Smash Bros.fighting game series.
During the Anarchy in the Arena match that saw the Chris Jericho Appreciation Society stable go up against the Blackpool Combat Club, Eddie Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz, a sign could be spotted in the crowd that said “SMASH BROS IS NOT A FIGHTING GAME.” While some may be confused by this sign, it’s long been a debate in the fighting game community ifSuper Smash Bros.should be considered a fighting game or if it falls under some other category.

Super Smash Bros.is recognized as a fighting game by major organizationsand featured at some of the world’s biggest fighting game tournaments, but there are still those who argue that it should be classified as a party game instead. It remains a controversial topic in the fighting game community, but it’s not the first time a controversial video game opinion was shared at an All Elite wrestling event.
It’s not uncommon to see AEW signs make all kinds of claims about video games. In one instance, a sign claimed thatDragon Warriors Monsterswas better thanPokemon, while another attempted todefendKingdom Hearts' plot. For over a year now, AEW fans have used signs to argue about JRPGs, claiming one is better than the other, that one game is overrated, that another game is underrated, etc.
It’s no surprise that there is a great deal of overlap between gamers and AEW fans. After all, AEW has had ties to the video game industry pretty much since the start, with its second major pay-per-view held at theCEO fighting game event.
As far as its own video games, AEW has a free-to-play mobile game and is looking to break into the console market withAEW Fight Forever. TheAEW Fight Forevervideo gamehas shown off character models for some of the company’s stars, but a deep dive into the gameplay has yet to take place. There are rumors that theAEW Fight Foreverrelease date will be later this year, but that has yet to be confirmed at the time of this writing.
