Zamata, who was announced to be joining theAgatha: Coven of Chaoscast alongside Eric Andrein November, confirmed in an interview withMashablethat she portrays the character Jennifer Kale, a sorceress from Marvel comics that often appears alongside the prominent character Man-Thing as an assistant in his defense of the Nexus of All Realities in her native Florida. “I definitely did do as much [comic book] research as I could,” Zamata said, discussing her take on the character. “But the way we formed this character is very different from what I think people expect.”
Throughout the interview, Zamata also touched on her feelings towards the experience of working on the project, revealing some rather fitting behavior behind the scenes of the magic-heavy production ofAgatha: Coven of Chaos. “Shooting the show was so magical and ethereal. It brought that out of everyone on set,” she said. “There were crystals and candles everywhere. We saged and cleansed the stage all the time. It was the perfect environment for me.” Despite her candid and interesting confirmation, there was no mention of any new plot points, which has been the case sinceAgatha: Coven of Chaosstar Patti LuPoneteased details about the show.
Zamata’s description of the MCU filming atmosphere tracks with other newcomers to the franchise, with generally positive reviews andGame of Thronesstar Emilia Clarkeranking her MCU experience as the best, despite having worked on the hit HBO series andStar Wars. While this good reputation has not exempted the company from the ongoing SAF-AFTRA strike action, it’s a good tactic for an ever-expanding cinematic universe to ensure that new additions to the casts of its upcoming projects hear good things on the way in and say good things when filming wraps.
While her experience behind the scenes has been good, Zamata and her co-stars have a lot of work ahead of them, as many have described the Agatha spin-off series as Marvel Studios' most unnecessary project and voiced doubt about howAgatha: Coven of Chaoscould connect to the rest of the MCU, which has only grown more vast and complex sinceWandaVisionconclude its limited run on Disney Plus. While its 2024 release is now in question due to the strikes, it will be interesting to see what the stellar cast can do in the face of a fanbase that seems increasingly resentful of their favorite genre.
Agatha: Coven of Chaosis currently set to premiere on Disney Plus in 2024.
