Summary
A surprise leak has revealed the existence of an unannounced game set in theRuneScapeuniverse. As a 2001 release,RuneScaperemains one of theoldest MMORPGs still online today, with a dedicated community keeping it alive over two decades later.
For years, Jagex has made multiple attempts to release another project with the longevity and popularity ofRuneScape. Games such asTransformers UniverseandStellar Dawnwere canceled, while titles likeBlock N Load,FunOrb, andChronicle: RuneScape Legendswere all released and later discontinued. It seems as though no matter what the studio tries, all roads lead back toRuneScape, but this leak shows that the developer may be embracing that going forward.

Images of the unannouncedRuneScapetitle were leaked onTwitter, featuring early mockups of the game including menu art. The images resemble systems seen in modern RPGs such asThe Witcher 3, however, there are some indications here that this was intended to be a multiplayer title. One thing of note is that the menus mention a potential Battlepass.RuneScapeis no stranger to controversial updates, and that certainly sounds like it would have the potential to join the list if it came to fruition. There’s definitely a ton of potential in these early images, with the iconicRuneScapeaesthetic blending well with modern RPG mechanics.
However, there’s a reason the game remains unannounced. Those hoping to get their hands on this game any time soon may find themselves bitterly disappointed. In response to the leak, Jagex developer Jay Reid responded on Twitter, claiming that while the leak was real, the game was “canned several years ago due to market shifts and constantly changing demands/identity.” It’s certainly a shame that this project seems to be canceled for now -RuneScaperemains one of thebest free-to-play MMOs of all time, but a new title opens up new gameplay possibilities, and it seems that was the way this game was headed.

Although the failure to bring anotherRuneScapegame to life might be disappointing news for some fans, there’s still plenty to be positive about in the original game. Earlier this year,RuneScapereleased the Necromancy skill, bringing the first-ever new combat style into the game. In bothRuneScape 3andOld School RuneScape, Jagex continues to bring frequent updates that add new content, ensuring there’s always a new adventure just around the corner - even if it isn’t an entirely new game.
