At this point, most people playing through the remake ofResident Evil 4will have noticed how heavy Ashley’s breathing is throughout various moments in the game, which became too much for one modder who decided to mute it. While games likeSilent Hillfavor a more psychological approach to horror, theREseries leans towards overt scares, with zombies, bioweapons, and evil corporations. It’s a formula that’s been the bedrock of Capcom’s flagship franchise for years, and it evidently works.
The fact thatResident Evil 4sold millions in its first two daysproves that fans are still interested in horror games that feature less subtle scares. While the recent remake is proving very popular, more than living up to the hype that was built up for some time, it’s by no means perfect. This is where the modding community comes to the rescue, offering up a selection of tweaks and fixes.

A recent one comes from Nexus Mods user NSA Cloud and is simply called “Mute Ashley’s Breathing.” As the name implies, this is a modification for the remake ofResident Evil 4that silences this modern damsel in distress who pants so heavily after she’s been running. It seems as though this has been quite the annoyance for some fans, with a few comments being left on the page thanking NSA Cloud for this little fix. One person even asked whether it would also be possible to do something about Leon’s grunts. No doubt a few more fans will be keen to give this Ashley mod a try, hoping to stem the potential embarrassment of other people hearing a character gasp and wheeze so loudly.
This is not the first time someone has modded the President’s daughter, either. As a joke, someone recently decided togiveResident Evil 4’s Ashley giant Dumbo ears, making her look more akin to her character model in the original game where her ears are more prominent. Despite the game only coming out recently, it shows how dedicated and quick to act the modding community is, and it will be interesting to see what other tweaks they can come up with for the remake.
It’s good to see theResident Evilseries is still going strong. WithRE4doing well, not to mention a possible ninth installment in development, Capcom apparently doesn’t want to stop this juggernaut dead in its tracks, not when things are going so well for it. It may have had its weaker moments in the past, but theREname continues to dominate the survival horror genre.
Resident Evil 4is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
