According to a recent report, Ubisoft has green-lit a remake ofAssassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, but it’s still early in development. As such, the title is years away from a proper reveal and release, and plenty could change between now and then. Ubisoft is currently working on a number of newAssassin’s Creedgames, as it is betting big on the franchise moving forward, and these include (but are not limited to)AC Mirage, AC Hexe, AC Red, andAC Nexus—a VR title featuring Ezio, Connor, and Kassandra.
Interestingly, while a few titles likeAC3have received remasters and plenty of titles have received ports, there’s not much in the way of proper remakes for theAssassin’s Creedfranchise. Breaking that approach withAssassin’s Creed 4: Black Flagis certainly welcome, but it also comes afterUbisoft squashed rumors of anAC1 Remakea few months ago. It would make more sense forAC1to be remade first, if done right, especially if it was able to compare to Capcom’sResident Evilremakes. Either way, it remains to be seen if Ubisoft has a full plan for remakes withAssassin’s Creed, and what manifests from that.

Speaking to sources who wish to remain anonymous, Kotaku was the first to report this news of anAssassin’s Creed 4: Black Flagremake. Kotaku’s sources say that it is still in the earliest stages, putting the project a couple of years out, and that Ubisoft Singapore is involved to some degree. It’s not clear if Ubisoft Singapore is leading the project, as it is currently the lead studio onSkull and Bones. Further, it should be noted that Ubisoft Singapore, to some capacity, has worked on every mainAssassin’s Creedtitle sinceAC2. This is usually the result of key gameplay features, like naval combat inAssassin’s Creed 3.
It’ll be years before fans learn anything in an official capacity, but in terms of speculation, it would make sense if Ubisoft Singapore used its ocean tech evidenced inSkull and Bonesto improveAC Black Flag’s naval combat. After all, the idea forSkull and Bonescame from the success ofAC: Black Flag, just as abug inAC Odysseyled toImmortals Fenyx Rising. It all comes full circle.
Of course, this news does leave some fans questioning the fate ofSkull and Bones. After several delays, the title is currently without a release date, but there is abeta planned forSkull and Bones.
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flagis available natively on PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U.
