Komi Can’t Communicatecaptured the hearts of many anime fans when it debuted in 2021, and it strengthened that hold with its 2022 sequel season. Its sweet, romantic atmosphere and sense of humor were a powerful combination, and the collection of eccentric characters helped this adaptation of an equally popular manga series stand out as one of the better comedies of the 2020s.

Hoping to make friends on his first day of school, Raido reaches out to the student sitting next to him, Reina Aharen. However, he finds it hard to communicate with her or even understand her actions, asshe speaks so quietly that it is almost impossible to hear her.

Aharen-san Is Indecipherabledebuted in Spring 2022, and proved popular enough to warrant a sequel season to be put into production. The antics between Raido and Aharen are quite hilarious, and their unique characteristics keep things from getting stale.

When Tohru Honda’s mother dies in an accident, she is sent to live with her grandfather, but finding the place uncomfortable, she decides to move out. By chance, she is given the opportunity to live with the Sohmas, and learns a strange family secret.

Fruits Basketwas a classic shojo anime series from the early 2000s, but it was rebooted in 2019, allowing for a more complete adaptation of the manga. The growing relationships between Tohru and the various members of the Sohma family are heartwarming to watch, and the former’s relentless drive to push forward despite life’s harsh challenges is inspiring.

Seventeen-year-old Rei Kiriyama is a shogi prodigy with few connections to others. A lonely young man who lost his family in an accident, Rei finds himself reluctantly connected to the Kawamato sisters, who slowly pull him out of his shell.

March Comes In Like A Lionmight not be as silly asKomi Can’t Communicateis, but there is a soothing aspect to the show, and watching Rei warm up to the people around him is quite touching. It does have some drama here and there, but it is only to balance out the lighthearted parts.

After Seishu Handa loses his temper and punches a man at a calligraphy exhibition, he is shipped out to a remote island to reflect on his actions. There, he comes into contact with the locals, including an energetic young girl named Naru.

Barakamonis abundle of laughs, and the dynamic between the antisocial Handa and the obnoxious Naru is always fun to watch. Seeing Handa grow as a person thanks to the influence of the locals and how it improves his calligraphy is also fun to watch.

One of the funniest anime series of the 2000s,Azumanga Daiohchronicles the adventures of six high school girls, each of them with their own quirky, yet distinctive personality. There’s no real overarching plot, and every episode prefers to focus on silly conversations and hijinks that the girls get up to.

Even so,Azumanga Daiohstill has a lot of bright spots. The show is quirky and funny, and the characters are a delight to watch. While there aren’t many heartwarming moments like inKomi Can’t Communicate, this show is still a bundle of laughs.

Nanako Yukishiro seems like a normal girl, except for one thing: she can only communicate in senryu, poems formed in a 5-7-5 syllabic pattern (which Westerners may know as a haiku). She strikes up an unlikely friendship with Eiji Busujima, with whom she attends her school’s Literature Club.

This anime is fairly short at only twelve minutes per episode, but it provides a nice, low-intensity experience for people hoping for a drama-free anime. With its lighthearted story beats and adorable characters,Senryu Girlis the perfect anime to watch whilewinding down from a tough day.

Kyoko Hori looks like a cheerful, stylish young girl, while Izumi Miyamura seems like a quiet loner. However, their real personas, which they attempt to hide from their classmates at school, couldn’t be more different. One day, they happen to stumble upon each other’s secrets, and a relationship blooms between them.

Compared to the other entries on this list,Horimiyaleans more toward the romantic side rather than the comedic side. Despite this, it’s still quite entertaining to see this duo balance their outward personalities with their inner selves,and the series is very popular. Also,Horimiya: The Missing Piecesis just a straight-up slice-of-life comedy, with romance being a small part of the overall package. It is arguably even better than the first season.

On his first day at Osai Academy, a former all-girls school, Takatoshi Tsuda is immediately recruited into its Student Council as its first male vice president. As he gets used to his new role, he also becomes familiar with the other council members, who all have their unique quirks and eccentricities.

Seitokai Yakuindomois definitely heavier on comedy than it is on romance or even traditional slice of life, butthat doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its romantic moments. It’s also much raunchier than series likeKomi Can’t Communicate, but only in a verbal way.

Nishikata has a problem, and her name is Takagi. No matter what he does, he can’t seem to get an edge over her, and he always falls for her pranks and jokes. Unbeknownst to him, of course, is the fact that Takagi has a crush on him, which everyone else seems to know.

Karakai Jozu No Takagi-sanis a lighthearted series that focuses more on comedic moments than romantic ones, but the undertones are present. It’s an adorable series perfect for viewers who just want a light, drama-free experience.
