The holidays are just around the corner, and schoolwork and classes are on pause, but let’s prepare for the new semester! Coming back to Hogwarts after Christmas break in the Wizarding World ofHarry Pottermeans the students have to choose their classes very carefully, as it will affect their grades and future jobs.
Some subjects are mandatory, some are elective, yet depending on one’s interest, each subject can be a lot of fun. Take Hagrid and Newt Scamander, for example. Their interest in magical creatures has helped them to get a career related to their passion, all thanks to their time at Hogwarts. As always, help is always given at the school.
10Muggle Studies
Studies About No-Maj
This elective course was taught by Charity Burbage, who had been teaching at Hogwarts for years prior to her murder, right before the Second Wizarding War. For some wizards and witches,muggles are deeply fascinating people, as they live their lives without magic and rely on technology, electricity, and other means of survival.
As an optional subject, this class might be overlooked by the overproud and pure-blood maniac magic community. However, this subject is very important for those who have to deal with muggle businesses like Arthur Weasley.
9History of Magic
Not The Boring Kind
The usual history class that Muggles have might be uninteresting, but thehistory class in Hogwartsis not going to be a snooze fest. Although the class is taught by a drowsy teacher named Cuthbert Binns, who happens to be a ghost, the class is sometimes also taught via paintings of Hogwarts founders, teaching the students about the founding of Hogwarts and its rich history.
One particular painting that is often brought up to the class is the painting of Rowena Ravenclaw, and other ghosts also often come in and teach the young wizards and witches.
8Divination
Not Just About Zodiac
This elective course is taught by Sybill Trelawney, the descendant of the Great Seer, Cassandra Trelawney. Divination class taught methods of predicting and looking through the future by using tea dregs, crystal balls, visions, astrology, and horoscope charts.
Many do not take this course seriously due to its unstable and complicated nature, yet the predictions made by the True Seer are an important plot point in theHarry Potteruniverse, as can be seen frompiles of prophecy storedin the Ministry of Magic.
7Flying Class
Driving Class, But Better
Flying with a broomstick is one of the basic skills a wizard or a witch should have obtained since they were young. Also known as Broom Flight Class, the Flying class is taught by Rolanda Hooch for first-year students.
The lesson is mostly about how to fly safely, and how to gain total control of the broomstick, just like how muggles learn how to drive cars while maintaining safety and assurance. It is one of the most popular classes among its students, given its fun and exciting nature.
6Care Of Magical Creatures
For Aspiring Magizoologists
Formerly known as Beasts class, this elective course istaught by Rubeus Hagridfor third-year students. The lesson consists of general knowledge about magical creatures such as unicorns, hippogriffs, flobberworms, et cetera.
The class also taught the students how to feed, maintain, and properly breed the creatures. Students who are interested in this class, if they pass their Ordinary Wizarding Level (O.W.L.) test, can achieve a job in Magizoology, just like Charlie Weasley and Newt Scamander. Those who are attending this class must obtain a textbook titledFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
5Transfiguration
A Guide To Transfigure Humans And Objects
As a mandatory class, transfiguration is a highly important subject one must obtain during their years in Hogwarts. The lesson consists of knowledge and skills development to change the appearance of items, humans, or animals.
Many prominent headmasters at Hogwarts used to teach this class, namely Albus Dumbledore. During the golden trio years, the class wastaught by Minerva McGonagall. It is deemed as one of the most difficult, complex, and dangerous subjects in Hogwarts as it requires deep concentration and mastery of charm spells.
4Herbology
Knowledge Of The Magical Plants
In this lesson, students are taught everything related to magical plants and fungi, as well as how to care for, use, and grow such plants. Students are also taught a few spells that are helpful in gardening, such as the Herbivicus charm.
Neville Longbottom is one of the few studentswho had a great interest in herbology and later became a professor for this specific subject. Other than caring for the plant, the students also learn how to utilize the useful parts of the plant, while also preventing harm and injury resulting from the poisonous parts.

Charms is a lesson that is taught by Filius Flitwick for first-year students. This specific subject requires the students' ability to concentrate, practice precise wand movements, and correct spell pronunciation.Hermione Granger is one of a few studentswho excelled in this class, given her successful attempts ever since her first day.
This class is known as a noisy class, as the lesson mostly consists of practice. The textbooks used are titled The Standard Book of Spells series and Quintessence: A Quest.

Potions classes are one messy yet significant class. It is as dangerous as it is important. The class itself is located in the dungeons of Hogwarts, given its nature of needing a lot of complicated and heavy equipment, such as cauldrons, big apothecary tables, brass scales, et cetera.
Potions are highly sought-after for theirbeneficial or even dangerous properties, ranging from healing to killing, depending on the maker. It is considered one of the most difficult classes to take, and even harder to pass.

The Most Important Of All
Defence Against the Dark Arts teaches its students how to defend themselves from dark magic; dark charms, dark creatures, and how to have a proper duel. As a mandatory class, funnily enough, it’s rumored to bejinxed by Tom Riddlewho got rejected from teaching it.
Ever since his rejection, no teachers have lasted longer than a year, feeding the rumor of the position being jinxed. It is stated that in later years, Harry Potter held the position of guest lecturer for the class, as he had extensive experience of dealing with the Dark Arts throughout his adolescence.
