Call of Dutygame launches aren’t typically recognized for their stability; from weapon balance issues to progression tracking problems and graphical glitches, manyCoDtitles are a bit buggy when they first debut. Sledgehammer Games-developedCall of Duty: Vanguardis no exception, but some serious out-of-bounds glitches on the multiplayer Sub Pens are giving fans some major headaches.
A reimagining of a DLC map from2008’sCall of Duty: World at War, Sub Pens is something of a forgotten installment in the series’ pantheon of classic multiplayer maps. Set within a Japanese naval base, the maps’ asymmetrical style makes it a standout among legacyCoDmaps. Unfortunately, as pointed out by Redditor u/dvo94, it’s rife with bugs that allow players to escape the normal play space.

In the clip, the player is cut down from out of nowhere, only to realize upon viewing the killcam that his attacker washiding above the ceiling in an out-of-bounds location. While this is in a fairly out-of-the-way area, there are many other game-breaking out-of-bounds locations accessible in Sub Pens, the most prominent of which being a catwalk on the other end of the map which makes for an excellent sniper’s perch for players who aren’t too scrupulous about how they come by their kills.
Sub Pens is far from the only map suffering from these oversights, asmaps like Dome, Oasis, and Castle fall victim to the same faults. What’s more, diligent players can escape from just about every map thanks to the infamous “elevator” glitch performed by mounting the corners of certain walls.
This underscores a greater issue regardingCall of Duty: Vanguard; Sledgehammer has been surprisingly ineffective at addressing some of the game’s mistakes. While the many exploits accessible on Sub Pens are more extreme examples, most maps have at least a few minor bugs. Despite a host of patches and updates aiming to mitigate these problems, many issues persist nearly a month afterVanguard’srelease.
Unfortunately, the development team is on a tight schedule.Split to some degree betweenVanguardandWarzoneand made to deliver presumably six seasons worth of extra content over the next eleven months, bug fixing may be on the backburner as deadlines loom. In fact,Vanguard’s first season is set to kick off next week, and, aside from the new Caldera map inWarzone, Activision and Sledgehammer have largely kept mum about what’s actually included in it.
While it’s safe to assume that major issues such as these will be addressed in due time, some fans may find it concerning that one-twelfth ofVanguard’s lifecycle has already elapsed with these problems present.Given the one-year lifecycle ofCall of Dutygames, persistent issues may stand to mar the game’s short-lived legacy.
Call of Duty: Vanguardis available now on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, and PC.
