Summary
Call of Duty: Warzone’s smoke grenades will be getting nerfed when the battle royale integrates withModern Warfare 3on December 6. This is in response to the “smoke meta” of last year, which saw players heavily relying on smoke grenades in the later stages ofWarzonematches.
Last year’sWarzonemap, Al Mazrah, saw a huge boost in popularity for smoke grenade usage. Much of Al Mazrah was more open than previousWarzonemaps, and combined withModern Warfare 2’s slower movement, this created a scenario in which many players felt the need to use smoke grenades. This tool allowed players to reposition or loot while under the cover of smoke, rendering them virtually invisible to the naked eye unless another player pushed into the smoke. Some complained that the prevalence of smoke grenades had become detrimental toWarzone’s meta, almost forcing players to use the tactical grenade if they wanted a fighting chance at winning a match.Warzone’s developers, Raven Software, seem to be addressing the issue.

In a tweet made toWarzone’s Twitter account, Raven Software announced that come December 6, the duration of smoke grenades will be nerfed by 20%. The tweet explains that this is in direct response to last year’s smoke meta. It’s unclear if smoke grenades inModern Warfare 3’s multiplayer will see these changes as well, or ifWarzoneis simply adoptingModern Warfare 3’s current smoke grenade characteristics. Some fans rejoiced in the comments underneath the tweet, while others claimed that the smoke meta was overblown and could be countered by thermal scopes.
Due to this nerf,Warzonewill likely see a much wider variety of tools being used in the tactical slot, such as stims, stun grenades, and flash bangs. This change combined withModern Warfare 3’s much quicker movement, which will also be implemented inWarzoneon December 6, may see smokes become significantly less useful. The adjustment comes alongside other announcements regardingWarzone’s approaching update like Urzikstan’s 100-player limitand various new gameplay mechanics.
December 6’sSeason 1 update forCall of Dutywill feature plenty of contentfor bothWarzoneandModern Warfare 3. The 6v6 multiplayer will get two new maps, the Gunfight game mode will be added, new killstreaks will be introduced, and more.
IfCall of Dutyfans are looking to get a leg up on their competition before the update drops, some have suggested thatWarzoneusers should playModern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode. This mode already features Urzikstan, and although there is no PvP action in Zombies, players can familiarize themselves with the new map.
