Summary
A lot has changed sinceDestiny 2’s first year, and this applies to more than just its story. From much of its original content either being vaulted or exchanged for something better, to its gameplay shifting to accommodate the addition of new weapons, subclasses, and skills,Destiny 2has gone through a constant evolutionary cycle since its humble beginnings. Furthermore, with Bungie’s longstanding MMO now in the seventh year of its lifespan as it approaches what its developer has labeled “the culmination of the light and darkness saga that has been ongoing since the first game’s release” in its Final Shape expansion, some of the game’s oldest remaining content has naturally been neglected as it pushes toward bigger and better things. Among this neglected content areDestiny 2’s patrol zones.
Destiny 2’s patrol zones are its many open-world regions where players can participate in various activities, including Public Events, Lost Sectors, and Patrols. Unfortunately, the joy of exploring these regions has faded over time, asDestiny 2’s more rewarding activities call players elsewhere. By and large, players now only return to patrol zones when necessary, whether for a bounty or a quest. Even so, asDestiny 2begins entering its Final Shape era, it may already hold the key to revitalizing patrol zones and giving players a reason to return to them and explore their every nook and cranny: Region Chests.

Destiny 2’s Region Chests Could Be the Key to Revitalizing Patrol Zones
Destiny 2’s Region Chests Are Currently Not Worth the Hassle
While most of theDestiny 2playerbase has likely already opened every Region Chest currently in the game, those who still have yet to retrieve them won’t find anything worth the hassle inside. As most ofDestiny 2’s Region Chests require players to do a bit of platforming, the reward for finding them is lackluster. Specifically, once a Region Chest is opened, players will receive Glimmer, an occasional weapon, and, if they open a Region Chest inNeptune’s Neomuna location, a bit of reputation with the primary vendor there, Nimbus.
While Region Chests could subjectively be seen as worth the trouble, depending on whether players are running low on Glimmer or are lucky enough to get a weapon with a god roll, they are, more often than not, a waste of time. The amount of Glimmer rewarded by Region Chests is generally less than 2,000 and god rollweapons inDestiny 2are so hard to come by in the wild that the “one-and-done” nature of these chests makes them unreliable for obtaining any weapons worth keeping. As such, it’s time forDestiny 2to reevaluate the purpose of these once-valuable chests and utilize them in The Final Shape.
Destiny 2’s Region Chests Could Be Used to Keep Players Coming Back to Patrol Zones
Destiny 2’s Region Chests may have been worth the effort many years ago, but their value has since diminished. That being said, The Final Shape may have a use for them, especially in light ofDestiny 2’s upcoming episodic release format. To renew players' interest in exploring patrol zones again, perhaps Region Chests could respawn at the start of each new episode and also be more difficult to find. Of course, they would need to offer more valuable rewards than they do currently.
Simply filling these elusive chests with unique shaders or ornaments could do the trick. For example, finding all the Region Chestsin one location might grant players a full ornament set. Additionally, Region Chests could still offer currency as a reward, but perhaps Bright Dust would be seen as more valuable, especially ifDestiny 2continues heavily encouraging the use of the Eververse store for cosmetic items, emotes, vehicles, and ships. There are plenty of ways Region Chests could be used to revitalize patrol zones, butDestiny 2will first need to consider using what it already has to do so.
