More returning characters fromDexterhave been announced to feature in Showtime’s upcoming spin-off series,Dexter: Original Sin, joining Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, Christian Slater as Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown as the character most in need of a swear jar, Debra Morgan.Christina Milian will play Maria LaGuerta, while James Martinez will take on the role of Angel Batista and Alex Shimizu will portray the dirty-minded forensics specialist, Vince Masuka.Reno Wilson will also join the cast as a new character called Bobby Watt.
Dexter’s prequel serieswill consist of ten episodes, with a release date not yet announced.Clyde Phillips will return as the showrunner and one of the writers on the new project, while Michael Lehmann will direct multiple episodes of the show. OriginalDexteractor, Michael C. Hall will be an executive producer onDexter: Original Sin, alongside Scott Reynolds, Tony Hernandez, Mary Leah Sutton and Lilly Burns. Filming began onDexter: Original Sinlast week, and fans are excited to see what happens to the much loved characters from the original series.

David Zayas originally played fan favorite, Angel Batista, inDexter. He appeared in all 96 episodes, and started out as a detective, before being promoted to Sergeant, and eventually becoming Lieutenant after Debra Morgan left Miami Metro after LaGuerta’s death. Zayas portrayed Batista again in two episodes ofDexter: New Blood, as he discovers the horrifying truth that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher all along. It is revealed in the spin-off show that Batista has risen to the role of Captain in the Miami Metro Police Department.
James Martinez will play Batista inDexter: Original Sin, as an up-and-coming cop in the Miami Metro Police Department15 years before the start of the original series. Martinez is an actor on the rise in Hollywood, and is probably best known for his series regular role inLove Victor, as Armando Salazar. He has also appeared in nine episodes ofHouse of Cards, and numerous guest roles in shows likeBillions, The DeuceandThe Cleaning Lady. Martinez is also familiar to gaming fans, voicing the role of Ramon Cortez inRed Dead Redemption 2.
Maria LaGuerta
Luna Lauren Velez made the character of Maria LaGuerta her own in the originalDexterseries, appearing in 84 episodes between 2006-2012. LaGuerta was the Lieutenant of the Miami Metro Police Department when the show began, and she was very much a force of nature, as she expertly navigated the political side of the police force. Despite her expertise in this area, she was also a very good detective, and this eventually led to her demise, as she figured outDexter Morganwas the Bay Harbor Butcher, and had framed her longtime friend and detective, James Doakes. Debra Morgan had to make the choice of shooting her or her serial-killing brother, and she tragically chose to end the life of the woman who gave her a detective badge.
Christina Milian will play a younger version of Maria LaGuerta inDexter: Original Sin, and fans will get to see her in her early days as a detective at Miami Metro.Milian originally rose to fame as a pop singer with a string of hits, including ‘AM to PM’ and ‘Between Me And You’. However, she’s also been acting for many years alongside her music endeavors. She starred in movies likeBe Cool, Love Don’t Cost A ThingandMan of the House,and was most recently seen in the television series,Step Up: High Water.
Vince Masuka
Vince Masuka was responsible for a lot of the funnier moments in the originalDexterseries, with his memorable filthy laugh being a feature of each season. Masuka was always making inappropriate comments, and many fans think there was a darker side to his character that was never explored in the original series. Masuka is one of the few characters onDexterwho remained pretty much the same throughout the show’s run, but he did get a couple of interesting storylines, with Season 8 focusing on the discovery that he had a daughter. Nicki Walters tracks Masuka down to inform him that he is her father, after the forensics nerd donated sperm many years ago.
Alex Shimizu will play Vince Masuka inDexter: Original Sin, as he starts out his career in forensics, as a young Dexter Morgan joins his team as an intern.It’ll be interesting to see Masuka in his early career, and Shimizu is the perfect actor to play him. Shimizu performed off Broadway before landing a regular role on a television show calledAlien Dawnin 2013. He played a character called Rock in 19 episodes, and followed this up with guest roles inPerson of Interest, Community and S.W.A.T. His career continued to flourish as he landed a major role on AMC’sThe Terror, while also appearing in a recurring role inThe Blacklistas Tadashi Ito. As well as his upcoming role in the Dexter prequel series, Shimizu will also play a role in Taika Waititi’s new movie,Interior Chinatown.
