It’s no secret at this point thatDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessshares more than a few passing connections with the duo of Disney Plus seriesWandaVisionandLoki. However, what might be a touch less clear is not just how deep that shared DNA goes, but in what ways they will all affect each other going forward.
Thanks to an interview with Michael Waldron, who served as a writer for bothLokiandDoctor Strange 2, it looks as though the secrets of the multiverse will bleed over from the new film into some future stories. When the season 1 finale ofLokiessentially opened up the concept of multiple parallel universes for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, it basically set the stage forDoctor Strange 2. Now, the latest film appears poised to return the favor, setting up bothLokiandthe future of the MCU itself.

Naturally, given howDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessonly just premiered, Waldron wasn’t about to open the spoiler floodgates and infuriate a whole bunch of excited nerd folk. So when he spoke to Digital Spy about the movie and what it could affect in future stories, he kept his cards close to the chest. “Well, I mean, look, everything leads into everything, right?” Waldron said when asked about a potential link betweenDoctor Strange 2andLoki’s upcoming 2nd season. “We’ve hired a couple of great directors [forLokiseason 2]. [Justin] Benson and [Aaron] Moorhead are brilliant. And Eric Martin has taken over as head writer for season 2. So the creative team is fantastic. As Tom [Hiddleston] once said, there’s plenty more mischief to come.”
Again, that connection isn’t exactly surprising for those who’ve maintained the gargantuan task of keeping up with the MCU canon. With the multiverse essentially coming around thanks to Sylvie inLoki’s first season, it makes sense that the 2 stories would become intertwined to a degree. That’s not even to mention what it will mean for the future ofElizabeth Olson’s Scarlet Witch, who features inDoctor Strange 2after the events ofWandaVisionalso heavily contributed to where the MCU is today.
It was helpful to have Waldron on board withDoctor Strange 2, particularly since he helped establish the context that made the entire movie possible. “I was glad that I came in with institutional knowledge of the multiverse and was able to get thecreative team ofDoctor Strangeon the same page as me on everything. Because like withLoki, that’s the most important thing when you’re dealing with this,” he said about working on both projects. “You have to all have a shared language of all this stuff, otherwise it can get pretty confusing.”
Now thatDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesshas finally been released, hopefully, fans can stop tiptoeing around all thetypical Marvel leaks and spoilersfloating around. It’s even worse nowadays since everything is connected, so aDoctor Strange 2spoiler could probably also ruin some surprises forLokiseason 2. But hey, maybe that just makes the viewing experience that much more satisfying when it finally happens.
