In all of theDragon Agegames, no other nation has been more notorious than the Tevinter Imperium. The first two games don’t give it much of a spotlight, however, the third one revealed quite a bit about the magocracy and its people. Still, the fictional sovereign remains as enigmatic and puzzling as ever.

Now, with the impending advent ofDragon Age 4, things are looking pretty positive for Tevinter Imperium. For one, all hints point to the nation being a prime setting in the fourth game. Being a society ruled by the most persecuted class of people in other nations, Tevinter Imperium is drastically different. So, consider this a brochure before the digital trip into Tevinter ImperiumcomeDragon Age 4.
Updated Jun 29, 2025, by Sid Natividad:The Dragon Age mythos has been further expanded in preparation for Dragon Age 4, orDragon Age: Dreadwolf. But this lore buffet didn’t come from the games, but rather from the animated adaptation,Dragon Age Absolution. And as one would have it, Dragon Age Absolution takes place in Tevinter Imperium. One can already assume that the game’s creators are conditioning the fans for their eventual delve into the same local in Dragon Age 4. Dragon Age Absolution definitely shed even more light on the relatively dark empire of Thedas. To supplement that knowledge aboutTevinter Imperium, here are even more facts about the kingdom.

A lot of characters outside the Tevinter Imperium inDragon Agegames often paint it as the “evil” empire, but not everyone there is as bad as the population’s most rotten eggs. What’s left of the empire of Tevinter Imperium is divided into three social groups who more or less live “worlds apart” from one another.
The nobles or mage families are the most notorious since they’re power-hungry and are predisposed to instigating civil wars. Next to them are thenon-magic citizens who outnumber magesor nobles and are mostly innocent. And then there’s the lowest tier in the population, the slaves who also have different designations as there are divided depending on the tediousness of their labor.

14Their Culture Is Decadent
As seen inDragon Age Absolution, the mages of Tevinter Imperium are mostly decadent and prideful nobles who see any elf as a slave or a potential one. A lot of the mages whoown slavesoften use them forimmoral reasonssuch as experimentation and other kinds of abuse, as was seen in Fenris inDragon Age 2.

There’s also the fact thatTevinter mages are more or less capable of almost anything. The empire’s Magisters even came close to attaining godhood before actual gods punished them. This kind of power makes them more or less unopposed under most circumstances, leading to boredom or arrogance.
13They Banned Blood Magic, But Only For Show
It’s well-known inDragon Agelore that Blood Magic is a one-way ticket to mental castration. The other nations who broke free from Tevinter Imperium and became powerful in their own right rightfully bannedthe magical discipline. Eventually, Tevinter Imperium followed suit, but it wasn’t exactly out of sincerity.
Most of their mages merely wanted to keep the prying eyes of the Chantry and the Templars away from their empire. So while Blood Magic is legally banned in Tevinter Imperium, it’s not shunned and in some cases, even celebrated especially in the hands of the nobility. It’s still seen as ambitious and powerful.

12They Still Have A Prejudice Against LGBT Members
Speaking of legalities, same-sex relationships or other non-heterosexual relationships are not exactly illegal or punishable by law in the Tevinter Imperium. Still, the general population and culture are prejudiced against the notion. Anyone caught in the open with such preferences or sexualities is subject to scrutiny or even shunning.

For nobles and mage families, anyone who has such a preference or sexuality is also considered a scandal; such was the case for Dorian inDragon Age: Inquisition. That’s whysame-sex and non-hetero relationships in the Tevinter Imperium are generally hiddeneven though there are no legal repercussions.
11Their Architecture Is Vastly Different Due To Magic
InDragon Age Absolution, the Tevinter Imperium’s architecture is a lot more wondrous compared to the usual castles and hamlets of the rest of Thedas. The adaptation borrowed much from Ancient Egyptian architecture when it came to portraying Tevinter Imperium; Ancient Egyptian has been a subject of fascination for a lot of historians and architects due to the unprecedentedly advanced ancient engineering.
It seems this derivation was intended since the canon description forbuildings in the Tevinter Imperium is that they’re built by magic. Their structures appear to be too difficult to achieve in the hands of manual labor. Given how there’s also earth magic inDragon Age, it’s easy to see how Tevinter mages can make carpenters and stone masons obsolete.

10It’s The Oldest Human Nation
The whole continent of ThedasinDragon Agewas settled prominently by a group of people who called themselves the Tevinters. That makes them the earliest human civilization or country in the place. Other existing factions included the elves and the dwarfs.
That isn’t to say the Tevinters were the only human settlers. They actually came as one of the several human tribes, but they became the most abundant after securing their own port city called Minrathous. After that, they eventually established dominion and their own king.

9It’s Ruled By Mages
Initially, they relied on the traditional way kingdoms and empires were ruled. They had a king, and he had his own royal line and trusted nobles. However, the magic practitioners and scholars of Tevinterwere a little too smart. They found out that they didn’t need a king since they were too powerful.

So, one of them, an Archon named Darinius, usurped the throne and decreed that Tevinters were to be ruled by magocracyor by mages. They also changed the name of their dominion to Tevinter Imperium, signaling their progression into totalitarian leadership.
8It Used To Rule The Whole Continent
Of course, it wouldn’t be much of an empire if it only ruled a port city. The Tevinter Imperium’s reaches became vast and spanned nearly all of Thedas. Even the current kingdoms of theDragon Agegames' timeline such as Ferelden, Orlais, Rivain, and all their peopleswere part of the empire.
Hence, much of the culture and people of those nations were influenced by the Tevinter Imperium. The Imperium’s reign lasted for more than a thousand years in this state, thanks to their autocratic rule and their proficiency in magic.

7Sworn Enemies Of The Elves
It was only a matter of time before the Tevinter Imperium had a run-in with one of the resident races of Thedas, the elves. The territorial expansion, xenophobia, and ambition of the Tevinter mages led to an all-out war between the two empires.

The elves used to be the most dominant faction in Thedas, but the Tevinter Imperium crushed them and enslaved their entire race after sacking their capital of Arlathan. That explains the destitute and deplorable situation of the elves inDragon Age.
6A Slave Society
The elves' defeat is why most of them in the currentDragon Agetimeline are slaves; their status was retained even as nations like Ferelden became independent from Tevinter Imperium. As such, the Tevinter Imperium is a slave society.
The same can be said of Ferelden, but in the Tevinter Imperium, it’s noticeably worse. One character fromDragon Age 2, named Fenris, is a good example of how insane and sadistic the Tevinter mages are even as their strength dwindled.
