Demons have appeared in most books and games as part of theDragon Ageseries. According tothe codex on demonic possession, they have been categorized by humans in a hierarchy since the Towers Age. Much is still unknown about demons, but the series has shown that they are spirits whose purpose has been corrupted in some way.

In all, there are nine categories of demons inDragon Age. However, there are also demons that have been encountered which do not fit in any category. These demons are often called other things if they possess someone, such asan Abomination, Ash Wraith, and Arcane Horror. The categories are listed by power, with the top being Pride and the bottom being Despair.

Pride and Desire Demons

Dragon Age’sPride Demons are known as the most powerful corrupted spirits of faith and wisdom. If they possess someone, they usually become an Arcane Horror or Revenant. They are not only powerful, but also clever, with a love of cruel irony and manipulative enough to seduce minds like a Desire Demon. Out of all the demons, they are known to be the most human-like, which is another trait that makes them the most dangerous.

The second most-powerful demons are Desire Demons. Their most dangerous quality is intelligence, as they use whatever their victims desire most to their advantage and cast illusions to appear as someone else. Most victims do not even know they are interacting with a Desire Demon. If subtle tactics don’t work, Desire Demons can also mind control people, and if defeated, they also are intelligent enough to bargain for freedom (though these deals are typically better for the demon than the victim).According to Solas, spirits of purpose are the sort that can be corrupted into Desire Demons.

Sloth and Hunger Demons

Sloth Demons have not appeared sinceDragon Age 2, but are known as the third-strongest demon type. They can shapeshift as well as bend the surrounding environment to their will like a Desire Demon. They like to trick their victims into relaxing, sleeping, or just being lazy, which allows them to feed on their energy.

Hunger Demons are known to be rare, and they want to eat anything they encounter, even other demons. They often possess skeletons, but the more powerful ones can possess a mage or disguise themselves as human. Only two have been encountered in the series, one inDragon Age: Awakening, and another in the Deep Roads Expedition ofDragon Age 2.

Envy and Rage Demons

Like Hunger Demons, Envy Demons are a rarity; In fact, only one can be metinInquisition. They do not wish to just emulate humans, but seek to truly become one. They do this by studying their victims and taking on their form. The victim is killed by the demon so that it can replace them without trouble, and they specifically seek victims in leadership positions. If discovered, Envy Demons are more likely to flee than attack. Due to their rarity, the average templar is not trained on how to deal with them.

Rage Demons are common, and are known to be less intelligent than other demons. As their name suggests, they are made of - and drawn to - anger. It is a being of fire and lava, and uses flame-based attacks. Instead of trickery, it uses purely physical attacks on its victims. The most complex Rage Demon met in the series is one that masqueraded as a goat called Lord Woolsley inDragon Age: Inquisition, but it attacks if unveiled. Some Rage Demons even possess trees, which create hostile sylvan.

Shades and Fear Demons

Shades are the form that demons take if they appear outsidethe Fadewith no host. Sometimes they are not demons at all, but dead souls that have left the Fade. There are Lesser Shades and Greater Shades, and according to their codex, Shades may be less purposeful than other demon forms in that being in the physical world without possession can be disorienting.

Fear Demons did not appear in theDragon Ageseries untilInquisition. Due to this, less is known about them than other kinds of demons. They rule over Terror Demons and Fearlings, and feed on nightmares - often mimickingwhat they see humans fearin order to feed. The range of how weak or powerful Fear Demons can be is vast, as it totally depends on how much they are able to feed.

Despair and Other Demons

Like Envy, Despair Demons did not come around untilDragon Age: Inquisition. They are corrupted spirits of hope, and were once thought to be a variant of Sloth. Most go to places that are downtrodden in order to feed on despair, places like prisons, alienages, and slums. They affect people around them, causing a spike in suicides wherever they go. Some even get smart enough to realize what can cause despair, and then do whatever it takes to create more.

There are also a good number of other demons, ones that typically serve higher-ranking ones. For example, Fearlings serve Fear Demons and Terror Demons also serve Fear Demons with Greater and Lesser forms. There are incredibly weak demons, like Wisp Wraiths, who are often mistaken for lanterns in the physical world. There are also regular Wraiths, which act as scavengers that swoop in for a feeding when stronger demons are finished with their own victims.
