10tons' isometric crafting exploration gameDysmantlehas released its first DLC, Underworld, which takes players into a vast underground region where new quests, weapons, and enemies can be discovered. Gamers looking for a freshindie gameto sink some time into may enjoy the crafting sandbox ofDysmantleand its new expansion.

Dysmantlewas released in November 2021 after almost exactly one year in early access and quickly became 10ton’s bestselling game on Steam despite the indie studio’s already impressive collection of well-received titles. 10tons' games tend to have an isometric,twin-stick control schemeas seen in roguelike shooterNeon ChromeandJudge Dredd-inspiredJYDGE.Dysmantlecontinues this tradition with its top-down twin-stick execution of the familiar crafting survival genre. Players explore a sprawling open world, with progression tied to the dismantling of environmental objects for materials in order to build stronger weapons and tools. A wide range of crafting options and the abundance of materials mean players are always making some form of progress no matter what they’re doing.

The new Underworld DLC has players leavingDysmantle’s post-apocalyptic landscapeand heading into an expansive underground cavern system. The underground setting doesn’t necessarily mean the environment is cramped and dungeon-like, however, as the Underworld is surprisingly open and populated with its own strange ecosystem. Underground rivers, trees, root systems, and giant glowing mana crystals come together to form an otherworldly environment that is refreshingly distinct from the ruined town above. Players can access Underworld’s new content once they’ve left the gates of the game’s first area.

The cavernous Underworld environment also comes with all the new features expected of an open world expansion, such as quests to undertake and new enemy types to challenge, along with new equipment like the crossbow, sawed-off shotgun, and a classy 1930s pinstripe suit. Of particular interest is the addition of fast travel capabilities between camps, a highly-requested feature that should alleviate the difficulties of navigatingDysmantle’s open world. Players will be able to take advantage of this new feature in the base game once they’ve completed a certain quest in the Underworld.

The $9 USD expansion also coincides with a major free update, Home Building. Players can access a mini island where they can safely build their own home base, complete with farming capabilities and a new Wrench tool for smashing more environmental objects in town. Thanks to the satisfying progression system, local co-op, and continued support from 10tons post-launch,Dysmantleis certainly worth a try for those looking forgreat indie games.

Dysmantleis available on Android, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
