Elden Ringis one of those games that fans will theorize about and find new details about for years to come. This is especially true because, while unconfirmed, many are eagerly awaiting FromSoftware to announcenewElden RingDLC. That could help fill in some gaps left behind by the story, as sometimes it feels like players are piecing together puzzle pieces without the full story.
ELDEN RING SPOILERS AHEADOne recent discovery is interesting, nonetheless. As anyone who hasbeatenElden Ringand seen one of its endings, if not all of them, will know, the final challenge before entering the Erdtree is Godfrey. Inside, players will face the second Elden Lord Radagon and the manifestation of the Greater Will, the Elden Beast, but Godfrey stands as their final challenge before that. However, official lore makes it seem that theElden Ringplayer is a challenge for Godfrey too.

As pointed out by Redditor M24Spirit, Godfrey’s initial cutscene will show his guidance of grace pointing toward the Tarnished player—meaning, in so many ways, that the player serves as a boss for him before he can reclaim the title of Elden Lord. Godfrey is the first Tarnished, with many following him into the Badlands (and cut Godfrey content suggests the player was one of them). His return obviously includes the return of his grace, per the official lore ofElden Ring.
The events ofElden Ringare orchestrated by Marika so that she may, seemingly, escape her fate and her binding to the Greater Will. Many fans theorize that the Tarnished was never meant to be Elden Lord; instead, they were meant to do the grunt work for Godfrey, who would then take their runes and fulfillMarika’s plan with the Elden Ring. Whatever the plan was exactly, it seemed a showdown between the first Tarnished and the Tarnished player was orchestrated by Marika’s grace.
This makes the duel almost as epic as theshowdown between theBloodborneHunter and Gehrman. The key difference here is that the Hunter and Gehrman dueled to save one another from the nightmare and suffering of the Hunter’s Dream, while Godfrey and the Tarnished fight to see who would become the next Elden Lord. Of course, players can choose one of the non-Elden Lord endings too, pursuing theAge of Stars ending with Rannior the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending.
Either way, it’s a showdown to enter the Erdtree—one where, it seems lore-wise, the power of Godfrey is on equal footing with the Tarnished player.
