Fallout 4is an amazing game full of fun little adventures that the player can go on. Whether they want to explore the Commonwealth and check outall the Vaults in the game, or they want to join some factions, the player has a lot of options.

One Vault in the game is Vault 81, the one in which the Dwellers are still inside and thriving. Upon entering the area for the first time, the player can give their blood to one of the doctors, triggering a sequence of events that could very well lead to the hardest decision in the game.

Fallout 4 - Molerat Disease

What Is Mole Rat Disease

The Molerat Disease is a disease transferred to anyone who is bitten by one of the Vault 81 Mole Rats, which permanently lowers their health by 10. These creatures were experimented on by scientists sent by Vault-Tec. Originally, the Vault was made to experiment on the Dwellers inside with the end goal of creating something that could cure every disease known to man. These scientists were in a hidden part of the Vault until they were ready to move on to their human subjects. However, once the scientists were ready to move on from testing their experiments out on the Mole Rats, the Overseer locked the scientists inside a hidden part of the Vault, letting the Dwellers continue to live in harmony.

Unfortunately, a young boy in the Vault, Austin, enters the hidden area and is bitten by one of the Mole Rats, contracting this disease. If he doesn’t get the cure, he will die. This event will only trigger if the player gives their blood to the doctor in the Vault and then leaves for some time. The Overseer will ask the player to enter the secret area and retrieve the cure, which means they will more than likely contract the disease.

How To Cure Mole Rat Disease

to cure the Molerat Disease, players must venture into the hidden area and find Curie, the scientists' Mr. Handy, who was helping them with the cure. However, the cure can only be used once, either to cure it for the player or for Austin. This makes it one of the hardest choices in the game. The question of whether the player should use it on themselves or on Austin is a major one. While allowing Austin to die doesn’t have a ton of long-term consequences, it is morally wrong. Using the cure on him will allow him to survive, and the player will earn a room in Vault 81; however, they will always have -10 HP.

There is no other option in the vanilla version of the game to cure this disease. If the player gives the cure to Austin, they will always have the disease.

If someone is playing on the PC, they are able to useconsole commandsto spawn a second Vault 81 Cure, allowing both the player and Austin to take the cure and be saved from the disease. To do this, enter into the console command prompt (using the ~ button) and type in “player.additem 00055f10” without the quotation marks. This will spawn a second Vault 81 Cure, which does work on the Sole Survivor, allowing them to cure both.

Use this console commandaftergiving the cure to Austin. If the player doesn’t, the quest can possibly either get bugged or remove both cures from the inventory.
