Wanderers in the Appalachian wastelands have quite a variety of foes to fend off as they travel through thedifferent areas of the map. Experienced players inFallout 76will by now have also noticed that the different regions, distinguished by their unique terrain and natural features, contain different kinds of enemies, though not all know that their levels are also dictated by the area.
While players inFallout 76are essentially locked out of regions that they are too low-level to enter, there are still some easily accessible spots that both veterans and new players can exploit to level up their character swiftly and efficiently. Those seeking the greatest XP gains should keep their eyes peeled for all kinds of quests, events, andtougher enemies, as these are the things that yield the most leveling-up opportunities.
Updated by Christina Roffe on July 03, 2025:As a new wave of Fallout 76 players emerge, especially with the new Atlantic City location introduced back in December, there are a lot of new ways that players can easily and quickly earn XP. This article has been updated to include four new methods for players to use to increase their XP, including easy strategies that won’t require taking out a whole horde of enemies. Whatever a player’s preferred method, this article offers the best ways to gain XP and level up quickly in Fallout 76 to take on more difficult quests.
Scrap Junk And Craft New Items
One of the easiest methods players can use to gain experience points is toscrap any junkandcraft new itemson a workbench. Players can either scrap itemsat workbenches in their CAMP, or they can find some nearby workbenches in the overworld. The easiest one to find is at the Overseer’s Camp, just across from the Wayward.
Fans of Fallout 76 can easily find junk scraps in new areas. Just head inside anabandoned buildingor area, and pick up any junk itemssuch as teddy bears, bottles, wrenches, pots, pans, and more. It’s likely that gamers will already be completing these tasks, but being aware that they can boost XP significantly is helpful for leveling up as fast as possible.
Defend Your Workshop
Another quick and easy way to earn some XP is to take over anyunclaimed workshopson the map, and defend them. To do this, open up the map and look for the icon with a hammer and wrench symbol. Then, go to the area where the workshop is located, and claim it to take control.
After the workshop is in the hands of the player, they’ll get a few events at random that will put them up against a horde of enemies. Usually, the enemies that appear are relatively weak, such as Radrats, Liberators, and more. There will be a few waves of enemies that will appear at the workshop and will attempt to take it down, but the event is usually very easy and will yield a lot of XP, which is worth the effort.
Eat Experience-Boosting Foods
For a simple way to boost XP gain while going about some main and side quests, players can choose toeat or cook foodthat will provide an XP boost. Some items that will give this bonus include canned meat stew, cranberry juice, cranberry cobbler,Nuka-ColaCranberry, and Lunchboxes.
Gamers can easily find some cranberries in the Cranberry Bog area. They can be cooked at any Cooking Station from either a CAMP, or those found throughout the overworld. Most recipes will be relatively simple and will only require additional ingredients such as water, sugar, and gourds.
Participate In Events
Participating in events is another great way to quickly stock up on XP. There’s alwaysnew events popping up inFallout 76, and sometimes they will offerdouble the amount of XPand rewards. Most of them will require players to work alongside other players, so they won’t have to do it all alone.
Players can check for events and Daily Ops on the map. On the left-hand side, there will be aWorld Activitysection. For those who want to take part in any events, they can find some here. Some events will require spending caps, while some will let players join for free.
Visit Harpers Ferry For Scorched Enemies & Turrets
When it comes to a mid-to-late game area for an XP farm, players should try out Harpers Ferry, which can be found inThe Miredirectly north of Big B’s Rest Stop and west of Tanagra Town. Players will want to follow the broken train, moving toward its front, to be led into a part of town that has quite a few Scorched enemies. Just be sure not to let them get too close, as they can be kind of grabby–the last situation gamers want to be in with some sort of disgusting zombie that’s perpetually on fire.
By traveling uphill, players can also find a trio ofturrets, which will give decent XP as well as some mechanical-related loot. Since many such drops only come from metallic devices and robots, they’re always nice to stock up on due to these kinds of enemies being somewhat less common than the hordes of wonderfully weird mutants players must dispatch on a regular basis.
Dig Into The Burrows To Fight Feral Ghouls
While players are in Harpers Ferry, it could be worthwhile to check out its sewer scene, as this is whereThe Burrowsare located. These damp and cramped underground corridors are home to some filthy feral ghouls who will immediately converge on the player the moment one’s presence is known. However, while XP farming, this is a good thing, since it saves the player from having to search around for enemies to kill. Just be careful not to get overwhelmed, as feral ghouls are all melee attackers that will attempt to smack the player around with their decomposing limbs.
These tunnels are chock-full of feral ghouls and other kinds of foes that don’t mind the stench of The Burrows. If the player also doesn’t mind wading around in refuse, crisscrossing this location can yield a decent amount of XP in each run. Just be sure to leave and come back so that enemies have a chance to respawn.
This large early-game location is full of enemies to take down, which, by itself, makesMorgantowna solid place to farm XP. In addition, there is a wide variety of events that one can encounter here, which also grant generous amounts of XP for those proactive enough to find and complete them.
Most of the enemies here are unarmored feral ghouls, meaning that one will meet little resistance if the player is in possession ofa reliable weapon or two. There are also some robots that can be found, defeated, and looted for some uncommon materials, as well as the XP they give when destroyed.
Patrol Point Pleasant To Find Cultist Enemies
After the Wastelanders update, the once somewhat docile location of Point Pleasant has now beenoverrun by Mothman cultistswho are extremely hostile to those who enter. This is one of the earlier points where players can come across enemies possessing actual weapons, as opposed to the beasts and mindless mutants who roam around aggressively yet aimlessly.
Though a bit tougher to take down, the cultists provide more XP and have a chance to drop better loot. In addition, this area can also be harvested forMothman Eggs, which can be cooked to create Mothman Egg Omelettes, a consumable worth 38 caps each that restores a large amount of health and greatly satisfies one’s hunger at the expense of moderately irradiating the player.
Challenge New Threats In Charleston
Located on the border between The Forest and the Ash Heap regions, Charleston is usually the first place players will begin to find some stranger and deadlier types of enemies. This is meant to allow gamers to test their mettle against new threats without overwhelming them with noticeably tougher foes.
Mixed in with more common enemies like feral ghouls and super mutants will be freakish abominations like the acid-spittingSnallygastersand the tanky yet surprisingly agileGrafton monsters. Those not ready to face these hideous new creatures can always head back into The Forest to farm XP from safer areas, though, this variety of new foes makes for a veritable bonanza of XP if one can take them down.
Wade Through Super Mutants At WV Lumber Co.
In the northeast of The Forest region, players will find a lumber mill that is home to an all-human faction company (the Free Radicals) as well assuper mutantswho are constantly threatening the area. The super mutants are a decent source of XP, especially since there are some rarer variants of them that can spawn here.
Since these foes can take quite a lot of punishment, be sure to aim for their heads, as this is their weak point that will allow gamers to dispose of them quicker. There are also quite a few workbenches around, so players can take a break from XP farming super mutants and transform the materials gathered into whatever they need.
Check Into The Whitespring Resort To Find Many Robots
This fancy location is what remains of a resort for the wealthy, though it is now populated by survivors, feral ghouls, and a ton of robots. If one does not wish to run around blasting foes for XP, there are manyqueststhat can be picked up here due to the high population, which also means there are a lot ofmerchantsto trade with at this location.
Robots, in addition to being mostly easy to take out, grant decent XP and materials. Therefore, an area packed with them obviously makes for a great XP farming spot. Be warned, though, that while the Protectrons and Sentry Bots are little threat, there are mighty Assaultrons that also lurk within The Whitespring Resort.
