Wordlehas taken the world by storm since it was released in October last year by Josh Wardle. The word puzzle game has become a favorite among those who enjoy casual mobile games, but it’s also inspired some creative fan-made projects. This week, oneWordlefan received aWordle-inspired cake for their birthday, modeled after theWordleinterface.
Wordlesrise to popularity has been dizzyingly quick. The game charmed players with its simple premise: solve a 5-letter word each day. Because the word is the same for all players, the game quickly went viral after players began seeking out answers and sharing theirWordlescores on Twitter. Since then,Wordlewas acquired by The New York Timesfor an undisclosed sum. Meanwhile, a spate ofWordleclones have found their way onto the market, each seeking to re-imagine the game.

SinceWordle’ssuccess, players have used the game as inspiration for a variety of quirky and fun projects. One fan of the game was gifted aWordlecake this week, cut into a square shape to mimic the game board. The grid and letters were created out of fondant, with the 5th guess reading the recipient’s name “KATEH” (Kate H). The cake was baked by Reddit user princesshashtag, who posted a photo of it to the /r/Wordle community. Reddit users praised the cake, describing it as “clever” and “thoughtful.”
Princesshashtag explained that they baked the cake for their roommate (who is aWordlefan) in an effort to learn cake decorating, but also as a birthday gift. Princesshashtag isn’t the only one looking to expressWordlein cake form; a lovingmother recently baked their son aWordlecaketo celebrate his birthday. It’s a testament to the ongoing popularity of the game.
Baking a game-themed cake is a popular way to show appreciation to gamer friends and family. In December, aDestiny 2fan shared a Gambit-inspired snake cake they were gifted by their girlfriend. That same month, aHalf-Lifefan received a horrifying, realistic headcrab cake, prompting one Reddit user to ask if they safely smashed it with a crowbar. These are just a couple of examples of the incredible gaming cakes people bake. Of course, cake is best served on a plate with friends, and not with a crowbar. With their thoughtfulWordlecake, it sounds like princesshashtag is a good friend indeed.
