Due to an issue with its branding, the developers of the fan-madeBloodborne Kartannounced that the demake-styled kart racer will be delayed to an unknown release date. Back in 2022, independent developer FanSoftware created a PS1-style demake of FromSoftware’sBloodborne. It had aimed to turn the gothic PS4 Soulslike adventure into a game that would fit the more limited capabilities of the original PlayStation. After this demake was released, the developers revealed they were working on a game that is usually considered a running joke in the fandom,Bloodborne Kart.
Fans were impressed with the early footage ofBloodborne Kart, with many pleased to see how they would be able to burn rubber on the streets of Yharham. Periodic updates of this kart racer were given throughout 2023, such as a video showing aboss fight against Father Gascoigne inBloodborne Kart’s campaign mode, or a playable version of Lady Maria who rides in an elaborate vehicle. Progress on this kart racer was going smoothly enough that a Halloween 2024 release date was set. Unfortunately, fans will need to wait a bit longer to play the game.
Why is Bloodborne Kart Being Delayed?
In a new video posted by Lilith Walther,the director ofBloodborne Kart, she revealed that Sony contacted the team regarding the game. She states that the game needed to be scrubbed of all theBloodbornebranding, and it will no longer be calledBloodborne Kartfrom this point onward. With the team complying with this demand, the game will require a short delay, though she notes the team doesn’t have a specific release date yet.
Could Bloodborne Kart Get Canceled?
Walther encourages fans, saying they shouldn’t worry aboutBloodborne Kartbeing canceled, and that it will only look slightly different from what was shown so far. She also notes that they expected that Sony would end up contacting them at some point regarding this and that they still had full creative control over it, saying it was “exciting” as well. Considering fan-made projects based on popular properties end up getting taken down, such asNintendo shutting down an unofficial port of aZeldagame, fans were relieved the game is only being retooled to be more legally distinct from its inspiration.
A lot ofgames end up changing their name, either due to a trademark dispute or a branding change to be more distinct than what inspired it. Although the kart racer managed to avoid being canceled, some were annoyed that Sony went after this fan-made project despite theBloodborneIP’s lack of activity. Simultaneously, many also understood that it wasn’t FanSoftware’s fault for this delay. Since the kart racer will no longer haveBloodborne’s name attached to it, fans have suggested other legally distinct names for the game, such as “Bleed for Speed” or “SanguineSpawned Kart.”
