What Are Singularities?
The Singularities portrayed intheFatefranchiseare irregular temporal axes that have deviated from the original course of history. These Singularities are usually powered by a Holy Grail given to a key individual within a certain time period. More often than not, the individual with the Holy Grail uses it to cause major disruptions in history, deviating from the original timeline. If the course of history deviates, then Singularities that have the potential to rewrite the history of the world are born.
Singularities function like someone going back to the past to change the past, which then has a great effect on the future and could lead to humanity’s eradication. If a Singularity is left unchecked, it could potentially destroy the world as it forces events that should not happen into existence. Suppose Singularities are left unchecked for a long period of time. In that case, the effects and distortions they produce tend to spread through history like a wave, causing other smaller-scale Singularities to occur.

How Are Singularities Resolved?
As Singularities are empowered by Holy Grails given to individuals within a certain historical period, the most straightforward way to resolve them would be to recover the Holy Grails. Once the Holy Grail empowering a certain Singularity is retrieved, the Singularity will eventually disperse as the timeline begins to repair itself and neutralize the threats produced by the singularity. Apart from the Masters and Servants sent by Chaldea to restore a singularity, the Holy Grail also summons masterless Servants who often play a key role in resolving a Singularity or disrupting history, as the case may be. However, the summoning of masterless Servants by the Holy Grail is a reaction of the Grail to its abuse, in which it now acts as a distorted Holy Grail.
Which Fate Series Portrays Singularities?
TheFate Grand Orderseries is the main portrayer of the Singularities in the Fate franchise. The series portrays the Chaldea Security organization, which employs the help of Ritsuka Fujimaru, the last master of humanity, and Mash Kyrelight, a Demi Servant, as they go on various adventures to resolve the Singularities that threaten to destroy the future of humanity. Throughout the series, Fujimaru and Mash go on various Singularities, visiting one timeline after the other. On their many journeys, they encounter Gilgamesh, the ancient King of Uruk, the wizard Merlin, King Arthur, and many other notable individuals whose names have been passed down through various stories from ancient times. IntheFate Grand Orderseries, Mash and Fujimaru serve as the main characters, and the series revolves around the restoration of the Singularities in order to prevent humanity’s extinction, which is supposed to occur in 2015 under the Human Order Incineration Incident. To combat the Singularities, a Grand Order is issued. As a Grand Order is of the highest importance and urgency for mages, it shows the necessity of resolving the Singularities.
Who Created Singularities?
While Singularities are space-time disruptions in history that threaten the future of humanity, they were created by an entity. The aggregate of Solomon’s 72 demons, Goetia, was responsible for creating Singularities. Initially,Solomon, the King of Magecraft, created the 72 demons as a magic ritual (the Human Order Incineration Ritual) to look after humans after his death. However, the Human Order Correction Ritual quickly turned into the Human Order Incineration Ritual as it observed man’s inhumanity to man. After King Solomon died, the 72 demons sealed within his corpse awakened and took over his body. Disgusted with humanity, Goetia decided to remake humanity. To do so, he needed a great deal of magic power and decided to build Holy Grails that distorted history. If his plan to destroy humanity succeeded, Goetia would return to the genesis of the world and recreate everything as he deemed fit.
How Many Singularities Are There?
After Goetia created the Holy Grails as Singularities to destroy humanity, he embedded them in human history and produced seven detonation points. Oftentimes, some of the seven detonation points would go on and create smaller Singularities as their effects passed down through history. However, the major Singularities are the seven points.
To defeat Goetia, Chaldea had to deal with nine different Singularities. These Singularities include Singularity F, First Singularity, Second Singularity, Third Singularity, Fourth Singularity, Fifth Singularity, Sixth Singularity, Seventh Singularity, and the Final Singularity. Unlike the First to Seventh Singularities created by Goetia to destroy humanity, the exact origins of Singularity F are unknown, as Goetia did not cause it. The singularity occurred in 2004 duringthe Holy Grail war in Fuyuki City. After the Singularity manifested, the city was engulfed in flames, and the Servants became corrupted and turned into Shadow Servants. The Final Singularity was Goetia’s base of operations. It was the last Singularity that the Chaldea Security Organization undertook to restore human order.
