The Fontaine region is expected to arrive with a major 4.0 update inGenshin Impact, but existing lore and clues in the game may point toward what could happen in the Fontaine storyline.
InGenshin Impact, the seven Archons were once established as the rulers of Teyvat and its people after the devastating Archon War. Each Archon would directly preside over its region and people, aiding them toward prosperity for thousands of years. However, the arrival of the Fatui and the Traveler would cause the remaining Archons to question their own roles. Some of the Archons have even lost their Gnosis, the ultimate source of power as a god in Teyvat.

Reddit user shoujomujo makes an interesting theory about Hydro Archon Focalors and her Hydro Gnosis, which will likely be targeted by the Fatui Harbingers in Fontaine. Specifically, the user theorizes that Focalors will lose her Hydro Gnosis during the events of the Fontaine story in order to stick to her ideals as an Archon. Focalors currently oversees the judicial system in Fontaine, and the user believes she may lose her Gnosis in a trial against a Fatui Harbinger. Thus far, every Archon the Traveler and Paimon directly encountered inthe main story ofGenshin Impactlost their Gnosis.
In the Sumeru story, Dendro Archon Nahida traded the Electro Gnosis and Dendro Gnosis for knowledge from Fatui Harbinger Il Dottore, one ofthe main antagonists ofGenshin Impact. After the exchange, Nahida teased the peculiar personality of Hydro Archon Focalors since the Traveler and Paimon will venture into Fontaine in the near future. If the trend involving the Gnosis continues, Focalors will likely lose her Gnosis to fulfill an important purpose.
The theory by shoujomujo suggests Archons are willing to lose a Gnosis if the situation benefits them. Although theFatui’s ultimate goal inGenshin Impactis kept vague, the Gnosis appears to be pivotal toward bringing the organization’s plans to fruition.
Genshin Impactmay be slowly building up to a major moment once all the Gnosis are in the hands of the Fatui. However, it may take years before the Traveler and Paimon complete their journey to all seven regions of Teyvat. For now, players may look forward to the arrival of Baizhu and Kaveh alongside new events and quests inGenshin Impactversion 3.6.
