This past week, Warner Bros. offered up the latest look atGotham Knights, the co-op action game allowing players to control Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Robin. The 13-minute video offered a glimpse of several aspects ofGotham Knightsthat had been left unshown. One such aspect was the game’s Gear menu. Perhaps it was shown too early, however, as some fans interested inGotham Knightshave taken issue with the menu’s design.
A thread on the small, but growingGotham Knightssubreddit called attention to the gear menu shown in the recentGotham Knightsgameplay trailer. In a derogatory claim, Reddit user AdZealousideal6959 said that they “hate"Gotham Knights' gear menu because it looks like it’s “from a mobile game.” The Reddit user didn’t elaborate on their claim. They only provided an image taken from the trailer showing the gear menu and Nightwing’s equipment and gear scores.

While the Reddit user didn’t clarify their problem with the gear menu, their frustrations can likely be assumed. To start, it could be claimed that the menu is very basic. There are only three items listed inNightwing’s inventory, which are his Suit, Melee, and Ranged equipment. Further, the user interface elements are oversized, as if they’re intended for fingertips rather than more precise controls. And, if there had to be another reason, it might be the values, like 214 for Power, 160 for Health, 460 for armor, and so on. The numbers do come across as disorienting rather than useful.
To be fair toGotham Knights, not everyone agreed with the sentiment by any means. The top comment in the Reddit thread says that they don’t believe people really know what amobile gameis anymore. Other responses dismiss it as lazy criticism, an easy line that doesn’t really capture what they don’t like. Another less complimentary reply says that it looks like “any generic gear screen.”
There are still over five months leftbeforeGotham Knightsreleases, so it’s entirely possible that the game’s finalized menus have yet to be shown. On the other hand, if what was shown in the trailer wasn’t semi-finalized content, it probably wouldn’t have been shown.
Gotham Knightsdoes seem to have some weighty expectations on top of it. It’s not a sequel to theBatman Arkhamgames, but many still view it as a continuation of those releases. It’s also been in development for a good amount of time, and marketed for a long amount of time, too. The gear menu isn’t likely to drive away any players, but early criticism is always a worrying trend.
Gotham Knightsreleases October 25 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
