LEGO Star Wars: The SkywalkerSagais still nowhere in sight after its most recent delay, but that hasn’t completely spoiled the excitement over the game’s ambition. Not only will this be one of the most expansiveLEGOgames whenever it’s finally out in the wild, but it also has the potential to be one of the most innovativeStar Warsgames in the history of the franchise. From new gameplay mechanics, to covering the entirety of theStar Warsfilm saga,LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagalooks to be one of the biggest collections ofStar Warscanon to ever be committed to a video game.
When it comes to theLEGO Star Warsgames, they aren’t usually known for having their own impact on theStar Warscanon. They’re mostly known for simply allowing people to play through the events of each film, all with the added charm of Traveller’s Tales' signature humor. RecentLEGO Star Warsgames have moved away from this however, putting their own mark on theStar Warscanon in small ways.LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagahas a chance to lean even further into this, adding to theStar Warscanon in meaningful ways to truly cement itself as one ofthe most importantStar Warsgamesin a long time.

Canon Additions In Past LEGO Star Wars Games
The firstLEGO Star Warsgame to make additions to the canon is also the most recent,LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The game was a major departure from what’s usually expected from theLEGO Star Warsfranchise, in that in only tackled one of the films in the saga. Nevertheless, the game did a few things very well, and introduced some moremodernLEGOgameplay featuresto theLEGO Star Warsfranchise. One of the new features included bonus missions that could be unlocked throughout various points of completion, and this is where theLEGOgames first made their mark on theStar Warscanon.
These bonus missions didn’t provide any remarkable revelations forthe narrative ofThe Force AwakensorStar Warsas a whole, but they did serve as an entertaining way to fill in the gaps of what happened before the events of the film began. One of the standout missions showed how Han Solo and Chewbacca captured the Rathtar creatures that appear in the film. Not only did this provide context for that particular plot point, but it served to expand the canon by explaining what Han and Chewie were up to before they appeared in the film. It may seem like a small detail on paper, but manyStar Warsfans know that even small additions to the canon can have significance.

Expanding The Star Wars Canon One Brick At A Time
IfLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagais going to continue the trend set byLEGO The Force Awakens, it would have even more potential to tell new stories that have their own little impacts ontheStar Warscanon. It obviously couldn’t make any major alterations to what’s already been established, but there’s so much room to just add to the lore of certain aspects of the galaxy. There’s also the potential to give characters small forms of development through stories that might not seem important in the grand scheme of things, but still build on why fans love them to begin with.
One potential bonus mission could see players explore the Jedi Temple on Coruscant with a young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker afterthe events ofThe Phantom Menace. The story could follow Obi-Wan giving Anakin a tour of the temple, while coming across all kinds of other Jedi that require assistance of some sort. Not only would this show the Jedi Temple in a way that fans have rarely seen before, but it would show a side of Obi-Wan and Anakin’s relationship that’s hardly been touched on in the canon. It certainly wouldn’t be the most consequential story, but it would makeLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagaa unique source of lore.

Fixing Past Star Wars Mistakes
When it comes to expanding theStar Warscanon,LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagahappens to be in a unique position in regards to the sequel trilogy. It will be the first time thatThe Last JediorThe Rise of Skywalkerhave been tackled in aLEGOgame, and it introduces a lot of possibilities forThe Skywalker Sagato fix some of the inconsistencies with the sequel trilogyas a whole.LEGO The Force Awakensalready started doing this with its aforementioned bonus missions, but at the time no one knew just how messy the story of the sequels would become.
The Skywalker Sagacertainly can’t fix all of the issues with the sequel trilogy, but little additions to the canon could go a long way towards helping some aspects of the films make more sense. One problem that many fans had withThe Rise of Skywalkerin particular had to do with Finn, and the tease that he is in fact Force-sensitive. While the film did provide enough evidence to assume that Finn was Force-sensitive, there was never any true reveal or meaningful follow-up. Even ifThe Skywalker Sagajust showed Finn using Force powers of some sort in a mission, it would add more to the canon than the films ever did.
LEGO Star Wars: The SkywalkerSagaalready has a lot going on, so it’s hard to say if adding to theStar Warscanon is on its list of priorities. The game’s many delays have certainly become a major point of concern for those looking forward to the next installment in theLEGOfranchise, so there’s a chance that Traveller’s Tales will just want to cover the core films before making its mark on theStar Warsgalaxy. That doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen however, as some additional story DLC could makeLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagaan all-new destination forStar Warslore.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagais currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
