Lothlórien

Located in northern Middle-earth near the Misty Mountains, and southeast of Khazad-dûm, Lothlórien is the forest realm of the Galadhrim Elves, Elven people of mixed Nandorin, Avarin, and Sindarin descent. Lothlórien is ruled by Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel, also the Ring Bearer of Nenya, who turned the land into a safe sanctuary of nature with the help of her ring. Due to its location, Lothlórien is the only place where the golden Mallorn trees can grow. The only Mallorn tree growing elsewhere was planted by Sam, in the Shire, after the War of the Ring, using thesilver mallorn nut Galadriel gifted himduring the Fellowship’s stop in her realm.

DuringThe Fellowship of the Ring, the Fellowship, led by Aragorn, travels to Lothlórien. They are then brought to Galadriel, who helps them, lets them rest, and shows Frodo her mirror, reinforcing her support on his quest to destroy the One Ring. The realm is later attacked by Orcs, which are eventually beaten. Galadriel then gives each member of the Fellowship a gift to help them on their journey, and wishes them luck with their mission.

Woodland Realm

The Woodland Realm is located deep in Mirkwood and inhabited by Silvan Elves since the Second Age. Elves from this realm are skilled warriors and archers, and they guard their domain without fear. They are also known to be more dangerous and not as wise as other Elves.Legolas, although technically not a Silvan Elf, is from the Woodland Realm and his father, Thranduil, serves as its ruler. After the Third Age, this Elven realm is the only one still ruled by a king.

Mirkwood and the Woodland Realm play a big role inThe Hobbittrilogy. Thorin and Company travel through Mirkwood as a shortcut to the Lonely Mountain, but they hallucinate and become weakened by the forest. During the War of the Ring, Aragorn captures Gollum and imprisons him in the Woodland Realm. However, Gollum manages to escape following an Orc raid.Thranduil then sends Legolas to Rivendell, as a representative of his realm, to inform Elrond about Gollum’s escape.

Rivendell

Founded and ruled by Elrond, Rivendell is, more than an actual realm, closer to an Elven town of great importance, in Eastern Eriador. Hidden between valleys and waterfalls at the foothills of the Misty Mountains, this realm is known for its cultural legacy, as it draws scholars, warriors, and adventurers alike. During the Elves’ war with Sauron in the Second Age, Rivendell served as a refuge, but by the Third Age it became a peaceful sanctuary for Elves and travelers of other races.

Rivendell is an important location throughout theLord of the RingsandThe Hobbit,as it is a well-known resting place. InThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, on the Quest of Erebor, Gandalf leads the Dwarves and Bilbo to Rivendell to seek advice from Elrond. Unlike the Dwarves, Bilbo is fascinated by the Elven realm and even considers staying. DuringThe Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo meets Bilbo in Rivendell after beginning his journey to destroy the One Ring. Following a meeting of the Secret Council, the Fellowship is formed by Elrond in Rivendell, kickstarting their journey together. After the destruction of the One Ring, along with many others,Elrond decides to leave Rivendelland travel to the Undying Lands.

The Grey Havens

Far to the west, beyond the borders of Middle-earth, lies an ethereal port, the Grey Havens. After the War of Wrath, before Rivendell was established, this was a major Elven settlement. Although the population has since decreased, it still remains a popular coastal town. Ruled by Lord Círdan, this place in the Gulf of Lune is one of joy and sorrow, as the Elven ships depart to go to the Undying Lands and Aman.

After the War of the Ring and the defeat of Sauron, Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond, along with Frodo and Bilbo, embark on ajourney to the Undying Lands, departing Middle-earth from the Grey Havens, as theLord of the Ringsstory comes to an end.
