MLB The Show 21is newly released, and the sixteenth entry in the popular franchise has already broken new ground in sports gaming. WithMLB The Show 21being one of the most exciting sports games in years, there are plenty of players who wonder if the game offers crossplay functionality.
Crossplay allows gamers to play with, or against, other players of the same game, even if they own different hardware (Xbox, PlayStation, PC, etc.). Whereas, in the past, hardware was a constraint that limited the gamers a fan could play with, today, an increasing number of titles are being released that allow crossplay between gamers playing on different equipment.

This series has always been exclusive to the PlayStation, butMLB The Show 21breaks that tradition for the first time, having released on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Of course, this doesn’t mean that Sony missed the opportunity to remind Microsoft fans who’s the boss of the franchise; because the developers, San Diego Studio, are owned by Sony,the start-up video on the Xbox version ofMLB The Show 21displays the PlayStation and Sony logos. However, the expansion of the series onto Microsoft consoles makes the question of crossplay a more pertinent one than ever, as it greatly increases the pool of available players from which a multiplayer experience can be formed.

The good news for fans of Microsoft and Sony consoles is that Xbox inclusivity is not the only groundbreaking feature of the newest Major League Baseball game.MLB The Show 21holds the distinction of being thefirst video game in the sports genre to offer crossplay functionality. For the time in genre history, gamers can compete in a sports game against other fans playing on the opposite console. Better still, while past entries in the series made it frustrating to review certain statistics during online play, amajor quality of life improvement toMLB The Show 21addresses these issues, meaning multiplayer is more accessible than ever.
For players who want toplayMLB The Show 21against their friendson different consoles, there are a couple of ways to enable, or disable, crossplay functionality. First, players must press the touchpad on the PlayStation controller, or the View button on the Xbox controller, while in the menu or in one of the game modes. The screen may default to the ‘My Profile’ tab, but if it doesn’t, players must press the R1 (PlayStation) or right bumper (Xbox) to navigate to My Profile, where they can scroll down to find the Cross Play option.
Alternatively, while in the home screen menu, players can click on their profile icon in the top left of the screen. Again, using the R1 button or right bumper, players must navigate to My Profile and locate the icon labeled ‘Cross Play.’ By pressing the ‘X’ button (PlayStation), or the ‘A’ button (Xbox), players can toggle the option from ‘Off’ to ‘On,’ and vice versa.
