The originalWii Sportswas a monumental success for Nintendo. At the time of writing, it is the most popular Nintendo game to ever be produced, as it allowed for simple gameplay using the Wii remote, something that meant an entire family could gather around the console and play hours of virtual tennis, baseball, and other sports. Given the success of bothWii Sportsand itssequelWii Sports Resort, many Nintendo fans had been wondering when the company would attempt another sports title.

Announced atlast month’s Nintendo Direct,Nintendo Switch Sportsseems the long-awaited successor toWii Sports. Though some other prominent titles were announced at the event,Nintendo Switch Sportstook much of the Nintendo community by surprise. Featuring six sports to start with,Nintendo Switch Sportsallows for sports to be played using the Joy Con controllers, similar to how the Wii remote was used inWii Sports. With only six sports being available at launch compared to the multitude of events that launched withWii Sports Resort, some fans were disappointed at the number of game modes.

However, recent data leaks may suggest that Nintendo plans to release more sports forNintendo Switch Sportsas time goes on. Golf has already been confirmed to becoming toNintendo Switch Sportsin a free updateafter launch. However, this leak suggests that both basketball and dodgeball could be added at some point as well. Basketball was a featured game mode forWii Sports Resort, and so it is likely it could appear again. Dodgeball would be rather new for Nintendo though as it was not featured in eitherWii Sportsgame, although it was available for play inSuper Mario Sports Mixfor the Wii.

While the data leaks found in the files ofNintendo Switch Sportsseems legit, fans should keep in mind that this is not a direct confirmation that either sport will be appearing in a future update. More optimistic fans believe that the names exist withinNintendo Switch Sports’data due to it being planned for a future update, while others believe that those names are merely the remains of scrapped ideas for the game.

Only time will tell whetherNintendo Switch Sportswill be bringing more new sports to the game besides golf. Some are speculating that the game may release some sports as free updates before moving onto paid DLC for new content. Whatever the case may be, Nintendo fans have more than one upcoming sports title to look forward to, asSuper Mario Strikers: Battle Leaguewas also revealedat last month’s Nintendo Direct.
