TheOverwatch 2hero roster continues to grow, and with how quickly heroes like Ramattra and Lifeweaver have released, it makes sense that they have not received full-on animated shorts like Kiriko andJunker Queen. Still, this has not stopped gamers from asking for shorts for these new heroes, and while this would undoubtedly be a good thing, it may be worth diving into some long-time cast members instead.

There are plenty of heroes on theOverwatch 2roster who were present in the launch version of the originalOverwatch, yet still do not have animated shorts. Zenyatta is one character that fans have said they still want to see more of, though considering how little is known about the monk’s past, perhaps it would be easier to deliver a visual version of a story that already exists. If Blizzard wants to go this route, it is hard to think of a better option than its musically gifted Support character Lucio.

An Overwatch 2 Short Based on Lucio Can Show Casual Fans His Rise to Fame

When playingOverwatch 2for the first time, a few things about Lucio should immediately become clear. First, he is a musician with an upbeat personality and the ability to boost the health and speed of his allies through the power of music. Second,Luciohas a love for sports like hockey and soccer, something documented through his dialogue, skins, and the Lucio Ball seasonal brawl. However, one thing newcomers will not realize immediately is his rebel past.

Before Lucio was a successful musician known around the world, he was a do-gooder who tried his best to help the Brazilian people. Eventually, though, Brazil was taken over by the Vishkar Corporation, the same organization that Symmetra andLifeweaverhave been a part of. With the company being overly controlling and enforcing strict curfews alongside unfair rules - while also having stolen the work of Lucio’s father - the present day Support hero decided to lead a successful revolution.

Though this event made Lucio legendary, it is something casualOverwatch 2fans who only keep up with animated shorts and trailers will not be aware of. As such, it is worth retelling this story in one of Blizzard’s beautiful animations. It has enough action to be as intense as something like Widowmaker’s “Alive” short, but it also has a great emotional hook like “Dragons,” which focused on the broken relationship betweenHanzo and Genji. This perfect balance between story and combat guarantees a quality short.

Blizzard could lean into Lucio’s passion for music as well, featuring a present day concert where he is singing a song in front of a massive crowd. Perhaps he will look out at the sea of people and think about those he led during the fight with Vishkar, with the uprising being shown in a flashback beforeBlizzardjumps back to the present day to wrap up the story. With Lucio’s actor Jonny Cruz being loved by the community, and his character being popular with just about everyone, a dive into his early days would undoubtedly be a crowd pleaser.

Though there is a case to be made about focusing animated shorts on newerheroes like Sojourn, every single member of the roster has its fans. Focusing on Lucio in an animated short would not hurt anything, as it would still be serving the same purpose of promotingOverwatch 2. Though Blizzard has to pick and choose who receives shorts, at least until fans finally get their wish and an animated series is greenlit, it is hard to think of a story that fits the short format better than Lucio’s heroic act.

Overwatch 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
