Tired of the same old standard controller designs, one gamer decided to re-theme theirPlayStation 5controller in honor of SpongeBob SquarePants’ bumbling best friend, Patrick Star. Thisone-of-a-kind DualSense controlleris sure to stand out when playing through one of SpongeBob and Patrick’s many appearances in the world of video games.
TheSpongeBob SquarePantsfranchise has a long history with the video game industry, with the first games inspired by the hit TV show appearing in 2001 only two years after the series arrived on the airwaves. While many of the square-shaped sponge’s forays into the world of gaming have been fun but forgettable outings primarily aimed at younger audiences, some games like 2003’s platformerSpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottommanaged to develop a cult following in the years after their release. The animated icon’s next big crossover with gaming is set to happen later this year whenSpongeBob SquarePantsarrives inRobloxas part of a standalone experience coming to the platform.

In a new post on the r/playstation subreddit, user TROOP_N_CONTACT shared a picture of the colorful, Patrick Star-inspired redesign they came up with for theirPS5DualSense controller. Decidedly brighter and cheerier than the DualSense’s standard white and black design, the Patrick Star-themed controller makes excellent use of color throughout to honor SpongeBob’s pointy pal. Replacing the stark white of the controller body with bright pink and swapping the black around the now-pink analog sticks for a shade of green similar to Patrick’s shorts, TROOP_N_CONTACT does a great job of translating Patrick’s color palate to the DualSense. Completing the custom controller, the PS button has been changed to the same deep purple as the pattern on Patrick’s shorts.
Redditors responding to the unique DualSense mod were impressed by TROOP_N_CONTACT’s handiwork, though some comments noted that it resembled a watermelon candy at first glance. Several commenters were surprised by how well the bright color scheme complimented thesleek design of the DualSense, with one commenter stating “Now this is what I call a proper custom controller.” Some Redditors suggested adding purple flowers on the bottom part of the controller to recreate the look of Patrick’s in-show shorts. Referencing one of Patrick Star’s most meme-worthy moments fromSpongeBob SquarePants, one popular response posted “Is this the Dual Sense? No this is Patrick.”
This bright and cheery custom DualSense controller isn’t just a great homage to SpongeBob SquarePants’ best buddy Patrick, it’s also a wonderful example of the sorts ofcreative hardware modsthat talented gamers can come up with when they set their mind to it. No word yet on if it will help players shave a few seconds off theirSpongeBob SquarePants:Battle for Bikini Bottomspeedruns, though.
