Yesterday, Sony finally debuted part of its upcoming next generation console, the PS5, by showing what its controller will look like. TheDualSense is the PS5’s controller, marking a departure from the DualShock which PlayStations have used since the very beginning, and its white design elements are prompting players to believe the new console itself may actually be white.
The announcement of the DualSense for thePS5is actually quite a big deal, as it shows that Sony is not simply upgrading the DualShock 4 to a DualShock 5 but innovating a completely new product. Its sleek black and white design could also have interesting implications, as the new PS5 could mimic its color scheme.

In the past, barring the original PlayStation, ever iteration of the PlayStation has launched with an all black color scheme and was accompanied by an all black controller. Though there have certainly been color variations such asglacier white PS4sand the like, they are always variants.
That said, even with the original PlayStation which launched in grey, the controllers have always matched the console in terms of color scheme, so there is actually some foundation to believe that the new console may feature elements of white design. Looking at the actual controller, however, it is clearly a mixture of both black and white. A black and whitePS5 design could look incredibly cooland would set the console apart from others in its line as well as competing consoles that rely on brand colors heavily.
The controller also has slight blue accents, similar to the DualShock 4’s indicator on the back, that may also make their way into thePS5 design. That said, just as the DualShock 4 indicator was capable of changing color to represent either the battery level or the input, the DualSense light bar will be able to change colors as well. This means fans may be able to expect a similar light bar on the PS5 as what appears on the PS4 to indicate the system’s current status (on, off, rest mode, etc).
Of course, this is all just speculation, and it is possible that thedesign of the PS5’s controllerdoes not actually reflect the design of the PS5. Still, it seems unlikely that the two would be completely unrelated, so at least some of the design aspects of the controller must be related to the console in one way or another. Time will tell, as the next gen consoles are slated to release by the end of the year.
