One inspiredPokemonfan found a wildly creative use for her collection of the iconic Rubik’s Cube brain-teaser toys, sharing a video of herself shifting the colorful cubes into a perfect portrait of the perky pocket monster Pikachu. Fans ofPokemonhave been producing some truly impressive homages to the Nintendo and Game Freak franchise ever since it first took the gaming landscape by storm in the 1990s, but it’s rare to seePokemonfan artcreated using such a unique medium.
For almost two decades now thePokemonfranchise has been delighting audiences around the world with its popular video and collectible card games, TV series, and movies, leading fans to produce countless inspired tributes to the popular property over the years. One of the most popular sources of inspiration over that time has been the electric rodent Pikachu, the pint-sized partner of thePokemonTV show’s protagonist, Ash. In a new video shared to TikTok, user bigwendyyy showed off her impressive artistic skills by assembling an adorably detailed portrait of Pikachu made entirely out of Rubik’s Cubes. The impressive creation, which took 800 Rubik’s Cubes and over 5 hours to put together, features a joyous Pikachu standing in front of a Pokeball with its arms spread wide. In the time-lapse video, bigwendyyy is seen carefully spinning each Rubik’s Cube to ensure that the right colors are displayed before putting them into place and moving on to the next one. The result is a pixelated Pikachu that looks like it came straight out of one of the Game Boy ColorPokemongames.
While the hard plastic tribute to the adorable yellow rodent may not be as comfy as thePikachu baby blanketcreated by anotherPokemonaficionado, franchise fans responding to the video were nonetheless stunned by the colorful creation. Complimenting bigwendyyy on her dedication to finishing the portrait even when the assembly became tiring, one commenter stated that the finished piece “was amazing.” While most of the comments praised the plastic Pikachu portrait, one user seemed slightly disappointed that bigwendyyy had to disassemble a Paw Patrol mural to put it together.
Painstakingly assembling hundreds of Rubik’s Cubes to depict one’s favorite Pokemon may seem like a tall order for many artists compared to picking up a pen and paper, but this video shows that a bit of extra effort can lead to some incredible results. And while bigwendyyy’sPokemonportrait may be a bit too unwieldy to hang on most walls, it’s still a far more practical way to pay homage to everyone’s favorite electric rodent thandying a dog to look like Pikachu.
