Throughout its 26-year history,Pokemonhas provided the world with close to 900 different creatures, and even more if one counts their alternate forms. With each generation that comes and goes, new types are discovered, and due to this, sometimesPokemoncan gain or lose one of those typings.
For example, Clefairy and its evolution form, Clefable, were both Normal-type Pokemon, who were both classed as Normal-type before the 6th generation but were changed to pure Fairy-type Pokemon. WithPokemon’s Fairy-typeheavily promoted, many of the game’s creatures either received it as a secondary type or changed altogether.

Reddit user VintageSpecialist76 proposes a different concept regarding the idea surroundingPokemontypes changing, asking fans about which Pokemoncould be considered to have one of their types removed altogether. An example they bring up is the Aron line, which evolves into Lairon and then into Aggron, and all three carry the duo type of Rock and Steel. They point out that Aggron loses the Rock-type during its Mega Evolution and states the line could drop the Rock-typing altogether and be considered a pure Steel-type.Aggron is considered one of the bulkiest Pokemonfrom the generation three class and one of the better Steel-types in the game at the time of its release.
User Jm1328 gives the topic’s highest-rated response with Ledian, who is classified as a Bug/Flying-type. They state that the Flying-type of this Pokemon comes off as irrelevant, especially when considering its signature move is Comet Punch, and its Hidden Ability is Iron Fist, which pairs wonderfully with any punching moves. In Radical Red, a modified version ofPokemon FireRed, the game’s developer changed Ledian’s duo type to Bug/Fighting, adding some more punch-based moves and bumping up its base attack stat to 95, giving it the attention it deserved. User FrozenFlames12 comically states both Psyduck and Golduck no longer get to have the Water-type, the evolution line’s only type in the game due to the travesty of it not having the Psychic duo type despite both learning a handful of Psychic-based moves.
One interesting take is the Spearow line, pointed out by user ZestieZest, which evolves into Fearow and maintains its Normal/Flying-type. As the Pokedex states, Spearow struggled to reach higher heights and longer distances while in flight, but its evolution-form Fearow can fly for an entire day without the need to land. It would make sense for the bird Pokemon to lose its Normal-typing upon its evolution due to it becoming anextraordinary Flying-type Pokemon. There are many other examples, such as Cloyster losing its Ice-typing to become a pure Water-type Pokemon, and as future generations release, it will be interesting to see what other changes will come to returning Pokemon and whether they’ll receive alterations or brand-new forms.
