The theme song for Season 23 of thePokemonanime,Pokemon Journeys, is here. Though the English-speaking dub of the show has yet topremiere in the United States on Netflix, the dub premiered in Canada yesterday on Canada’s Teletoon channel. A fan was quick to upload the 30 second song from band Walk Off the Earth for all of us to enjoy.

Pokemon Journeys, is the follow up to the several seasons based on thePokemon Sun & Moonvideo games. But in a break from tradition, this is the first time the mainline anime hasn’t been based off of the most recent mainlinePokemongames, those beingPokemon Sword &PokemonShield. But thankfully, The Pokemon Company has been releasinganime shorts to its YouTube channelbased off ofSword & Shieldunder the name “Pokemon: Twilight Wings.” For another trend bucked, this theme song may be the first ever to not include someone shouting the word “Pokemon!” at any point of its duration.

Instead, the new season of the anime seems to be taking inspiration from theongoing mobile game,Pokemon Go.Ash and Pikachu’s new companion is (creatively) named Goh, and rather than sticking in one region as in the previous 22 seasons, the twerps will be globe-trotting to different regions. The logo for the new season has a GPS-style arrow in it. Ash will of course be continuing his quest to become a Pokemon master, while Goh is on the hunt for the legendary Pokemon, Mew.

The fan reaction to the theme song seems to be fairly positive, citing a refreshing change in style from the Hawaiian and tropical-sounding themes and music from theSun & Moonanime seasons. Others will insist that it pales in comparison to the original 90s theme song, but that is nothing new.

Pokemoncontinues to enjoy its resurgence in popularity that started withPokemon Go. Sword and Shield on the Switch has been a massive success, and hasDLC coming in a franchise firstwith the upcoming Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra expansions. The “Twilight Wings” series on YouTube has been garnering praise from fans, and there seems to be genuine excitement towardsPokemon Journeys’premiere on Netflix on June 12.

Pokemon SwordandPokemon Shieldare available now for Nintendo Switch.
