Following the release ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet, players notice improvements made to cutscenes and NPC interactions, though voice acting is still nowhere to be seen. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster first week for fans of thePokemonfranchise. On one hand,Pokemon Scarlet and Violethave made plenty of quality additionsto the series including 4 player coop and a massive open world to explore at the player’s pace.
On the other hand, however,Scarlet and Violethave made numerous missteps, which are even more apparent due to some of the gameplay improvements. Namely, the game’s performance levels have been highly criticized by reviewers and fans including heavy framerate drops, extreme pop in, low resolution textures, and various bugs and glitches. For all the bad, many players have found some good, including improvements to character interactions and cutscenes, though these improvements continue to be undermined by a legacy staple of the series.

As such,Pokemonfans like Zipzzo have started to highlight their hopes for future games in the franchise. On Reddit, Zipzzo noted how much stronger thePokemon Scarlet and Violetcutscenes were from previous games in the franchise thanks to the use of emotion and a more dynamic style. Many in the community have stated how certain parts in the game made them feel different emotions like surprise, hype, and others.
Even with these cutscene and interaction improvements, much of it is undercut by the fact that no voice acting has been used to deliver these lines. With the improved emoting and the stronger dialogue, characters silently mouthing the words makes this issue even more painfully apparent than it has in the past. Zipzzo is hopeful thatGame Freak addresses the voice acting issuein the future as adding voice work could take these moments to another level entirely. While the discussion has seen tons of replies in favor of this change, many assume it won’t likely happen.
Nintendo has a long history of avoiding voice acting for many of its first party games, the studio started tochange course in 2017 withThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. For the first time, Nintendo used voice acting for characters that had been notoriously left silent like Princess Zelda. Fans immediately took to the change, praising the decision to finally add this element to the series which is set to continue with the game’s sequel,The Legends of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
