Ever since its introduction to the series in 1999’sPokemon Gold and Silverversions, utilizing the breeding and nursery/daycare features have been a core mechanic in every mainlinePokemongame since. It has allowed players to get certain Pokemon or only available through breeding, obtain some with certain moves only available through breeding, and even breed competitively fit Pokemon.
Seeing as Shiny Pokemon, which feature alternate colorations compared to normal versions, were also initially introduced to thePokemonseries in its second generation of games, another way players have used the breeding mechanic ever since its inception has been to attempt to breed for Shiny Pokemon. And while shinnies havetraditionally been very hard to come byin most mainlinePokemongames, it seems that some people just can’t help but be incredibly lucky.

A player ofPokemon SwordandShieldknown as TearfulHarlot recently encountered an incredible stroke of luck, hatching two Shiny Pokemon back to back. On Reddit, TearfulHarlot uploaded a screen recording of them hatching a Shiny Koffing, and if that wasn’t exciting enough, the player managed to hatch another Shiny Koffing immediately after the first.
Before this incredible encounter, TearfulHarlot had hatched around 600 Koffing Eggs in about 8 hours. InPokemon SwordandShield, many players hunt for Shiny Pokemon while breeding by utilizingwhat has been dubbed as the “Masuda Method,“which increases a player’s odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon by breeding together two Pokemon hailing from two different real-world countries. When this method is combined with the Shiny Charm, an item which also increases players' chances of finding a shiny, players have a 1 in 512 chance of hatching a Shiny Pokemon from an egg.
Aside from 1 in 512 already seeming like lofty odds, when considering that TearfulHarlot encountered two instances of a 1 in 512 chance back to back, it seems that the odds of this happening come out to a staggering 1 in 252,144, according to some number crunching Redditors in the comments on TearfulHarlot’s video. Andalthough TearfulHarlot is not the first player to encounter this, the incredible stroke of luck has had Redditors hilariously begging TearfulHarlot to pick their lotto numbers in one instance. And while that may not be extremely rational, TearfulHarlot has urged other players deep into their own shiny hunts to keep at it.
Although spending 8 hours hatching around 600 Pokemon eggs in hopes ofgetting one’s hands on a differently colored Pokemonmay sound like a slog, TearfulHarlot mentions that they watch movies and TV shows while hunting for Shiny Pokemon in order to pass the time. Not a bad way to experience one of the luckiest encounters in the history ofPokemongames.
