Summary
APokemonfan has designed a Venn diagram that highlights the color similarities of the Gen 3 starters. Venn diagrams often point out overlapping themes that are otherwise obscure, and thisPokemonone shines a light on Gen 3’s color scheme.
With each newPokemongeneration comes many new additions to the Pokedex which was no different with the release ofRuby and Sapphire. Gen 3 offered a fresh start, with the regional Pokedex strictly focusing on new additions. Players could choose between Mudkip, Torchic, and Treecko in the early game, whilePokemon like Gardevoir, Salamance, and Aggron have become fan favorites in their own regard. Continuing the trend started in Gen 2 that remains ongoing, Gen 3 also featured Shiny variants for each Pokemon. One gamer has created a Venn diagram that showcases the color similarities between Mudkip, Torchic, and Treecko and their Shiny forms.

Reddit user Tox-Sick recently shared a Venn diagram image centered around thePokemonGen 3 starters. Mudkip is represented by a blue circle, Treecko is within a green one, and Torchic is fittingly in a red one. As the circles overlap, they create new colors as they do when paint is mixed, resulting in cyan, pink, and yellow between the shapes. While the main circles emphasize the starters' colors, the Shinies are reflected in these middle segments. The pink Mudkip is between the standard Mudkip and Torchic, the Shiny Torchic is between the red one and Treecko, and the Shiny Treecko sits between the blue and green circles.Ruby and Sapphirewere the first games in the series to have a rich color palette, and this diagram shows the creativity Game Freak approached it with.
How Did These Pokemon End up So Similar?
This Venn diagram highlights that Game Freak may have been aware of the color similarities between the starters when they made the Shiny variants. With the Gen 3 starter Shiny colors being a cross between two of their base designs, the Venn diagram may hint at a conscious effort. While the cities in Gen 1 were named after a color palette,Pokemon Red,Blue, andYellowlacked much range due to the Game Boy Color hardware limitations. Shiny Pokemoncontinue to be a theme inPokemon Scarlet,Violet, andGO. As more Pokemon get added to the Pokedex, similar Venn diagrams may spotlight further similarities in the series.
Although it’s unclear if these overlapping colors were intentional, this Venn diagram could hint at some inner workings behindPokemongames. As starters are regularly Fire, Grass, and Water-type, they are normally shades of red, green, and blue respectively. This means that even futuregames likePokemon Legends: Z-Acould have starters with Shiny forms that reflect the Gen 3 starters.
