The first game for the PlayStation 5 has been announced.Godfall, developed by Counterplay Games, was unveiled duringThe Game Awards 2019. It’s a self-described “looter-slasher” and beyond some basic details, very little is known about the game. It’s not PS5 exclusive, as it’s also coming to PC, it’s inspired by Brandon Sanderson and Isaac Asimov’s novels, and it involves gear-based character builds. That’s as much as has been shared. But some gamers believe more has been revealed than is immediately apparent.
Counterplay Games is a young studio, growing from just 14 employees to over 75 in the past two years.Godfallwill be the studio’s second game, the first being the popular collectible card gameDuelyst.Duelystfans were excited to see a new game from Counterplay Games, even thoughGodfallis a world apart fromDuelystin terms of gameplay. But more than that,Duelystfans saw something familiar inGodfall. There are enough similarities that some believeGodfallmay even be a sequel toGodfall.

The core connection between bothGodfallandDuelystis one structure, known inDuelystas the Monolith. InDuelyst, the Monolith resides at the center of 6 moving continents and is only accessible when they properly align. It’s a giant white, obelisk-like structure and a place of significant power. And while the Monolith shown inGodfall’s announcement trailerisn’t exactly the same as the one shown inDuelyst’s art, they’re unignorably similar.
Duelystplayers then took to theDuelystsubreddit to ask Counterplay itself if there was a connection, as the developer is an active participant in its community. Asked ifDuelystis set in the same universe, Counterplay representative ThanatosNoa responded, “You’re bound to see some familiar names, but I won’t say more than that.” When the Monolith’s similarities were brought up, ThanatosNoa responded with a winking emoji.
Little is known aboutGodfall’s loreat this point. All that’s been revealed so far is that an order exalted Knight’s Order is intent on stopping the apocalypse and that they wear armor sets known as Valorplates. It’s possible thatDuelyst’s conflict between the 6 continents has grown into an apocalypse scenario. It’s possible that the individual Duelysts have evolved into a new Knights Order, powered by the powerful artifacts at the heart of The Trial of the Cores.
