Quentin Tarantino may not be a fan of theMCUor any other big movie franchise for that matter, yet to many people’s surprise, there are actually a couple of Marvel Comics superheroes that do tickle his brain quite a bit.
Those comments come on the back of Tarantino recently stating he’d actually never consider making aMarvelmovie, due to him considering the Disney blockbusters mere jobs given out to directors, instead of the scripts he’s always built from the ground up throughout his career. Still, that doesn’t mean Tarantino is impervious to the influence of comic books, though his tastes seem to be centered on two specific heroes.

As reported byComicBook.com, Tarantino expressed his fascination with a certain comic book while promoting his bookCinema Speculation. Tarantino expressed fondness forSgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos, a series created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee that ran from 1963 to 1981. Naturally, as the name suggests, that saga stars Nick Fury, played by Tarantino’s close friend Samuel L. Jackson, although the director’s liking might have more to do with it being a wartime story.
As for the other superhero who has caught Taratino’s eye at some point, that would be Luke Cage. “It was really Marvel’s attempt to try to do a blacksploitation movie vibe as one of their superhero comics. And I thought they nailed it,” Tarantino said, referring to the first run ofLuke Cage, Hero for Hire. Still, given Tarantino’s stance onthe movies Marvel Studios puts out, it’s clear he’s just having fun with these ideas.
In his ownThe Video Archivespodcast, hosted by Tarantino andPulp Fictionco-writer Roger Avary, Tarantino expressed his grim outlook on modern filmmaking, calling out the current era as one of Hollywood’s worst. That didn’t stop him from makingOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood, which has gone on to become his personal favorite out of all of his 9 movies.
In any case, Tarantino’s final movie as director will probably be made in this same time period, meaning he still can help modern cinema correct its course, just feel safe to discard any superhero films. To make matters worse, the Howling Commandos already made an appearance in theMCU back inCaptain America: The First Avenger, so there’s no chance of Tarantino getting his hands on his favorite Marvel comic even if he were interested.
