Red Dead Redemption 2is a massive game, and like most massive AAA open-world games, it utilizes many overlapping systems and mechanics which run collaboratively with one another. These systems allow the player to feel free in exploring the game’s open world, and means Rockstar does not have to specifically program every possible activity the player might get up to inRed Dead Redemption 2. One universal system is the game’s combat mechanics.RDR2is a Western action shooter, and as such it allows players to shoot at enemies who will react realistically to being shot.

However, since most NPCs in the game are built to follow these same set of rules, this means most NPC will react realistically to being shot. This landed Rockstar in some hot water afterRed Dead Redemption 2released and videos were shared of players attacking a suffragette NPC. Despite no one at Rockstar ever specifically programming what would happen when the player attacked a suffragette, the game’s universal combat mechanics still made it possible.

These universal game mechanics don’t always mesh well together, however, as a Reddit user named Allstar818 recently found out when they tried to bring in an escaped prisoner to the Rhodes Sheriff’s Office and ended up being arrested for kidnapping. The game allows players to complete bounty missions and turn in escaped prisoners to the various Sheriff’s Offices found inthe towns dotted aroundRed Dead Redemption 2’s map. To facilitate this mechanic, players have a lasso they can use to hogtie NPCs. However, as with the game’s combat mechanics, this system applies to most NPCs in the game, and the player will become wanted for kidnapping if they are caught hogtying innocent NPCs.

The problem for the Reddit user, is that turning in bounty targets and escaped prisoners to the various Sheriff’s Offices only becomes available to the player after completing the first bounty hunter side mission early in the game’s story. But since this side mission is optional, it is easy to get further into the story having never completed it. This leaves the game with the strange oversight that a clearly escaped prisoner can be carried into the Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff will react as if they have caught the player carrying an innocent NPC.

Red Dead Redemption 2is such a massively detailed gamethat it is surprising that Rockstar didn’t account for this possibility, especially since it would be possible to turn in the escaped prisoner had the first bounty hunting side mission been completed.

Despite being extremely polished at launch, somebizarre bugs and glitches were still found inRed Dead Redemption 2, although this Reddit user’s prisoner kidnapping scenario is more of a logical oversight from Rockstar than a bug or glitch.

Red Dead Redemption 2is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
