Summary
An update forRed Dead Redemptionquietly introduced a long-requested feature to the beloved Rockstar title. Many had assumed it would never arrive after disappointingRed Dead Redemptionports arrived in August, especially given that current generation consoles did not receive native versions.
SinceRed Dead Redemption 2there have been rumors abound regarding its predecessor,Red Dead Redemption, which was released over a decade ago in 2010. Some suspected that news about a remake or remaster would be eventually made official, hoping that the original game could be brought up to par with the sequel. However, these hopes evaporated when Rockstar announced that whileRed Dead Redemptionwould be making a comeback, it would only be in the form of PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch ports. While slightly enhanced, they turned out to be far from what is traditionally considered a remaster, and PlayStation 5 gamers would be stuck playing a version capped at 30 FPS. Fortunately, Rockstar has addressed that drawback.

Hours after the patch was made available, the official Rockstar Twitter account confirmed thatRed Dead Redemption,as well as theUndead NightmareDLC, were now playable in 60 FPS on PlayStation 5. The small update also allows for subtitles to be enabled when “first booting the game,” and includes unspecified bug fixes. Physical copies of the ports will be purchasable from October 13.
Albeit welcome, the increased framerate only solves one of a myriad of criticisms levied at the recent ports. Skipping over PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S was baffling to many fans of the series who have been clamoring forRed Dead Redemptionto make a return. Furthermore, despite offering virtually nothing different to the version released in 2010,theRed Dead Redemptionports were priced at $50. This proved to be an especially egregious price point given that multiplayer was absent from the package. Additionally,Red Dead Redemptionis still not available on PC.
To make matters worse forRed Deadfans,Red Dead Onlinereceived virtually no new substantial content for yearsbefore Rockstar announced that the seemingly limited resources assigned to the struggling multiplayer mode would be used to developGTA 6. Nonetheless, fans are likely to ramp up requests for Rockstar to introduce a performance mode forRed Dead Redemption 2, which is locked at 30 FPS on current consoles.
Red Dead Redemptionis available now for PS3, PS4, Switch, and Xbox 360.
