Since the beginning of manga and anime,Attack on Titanhas had a plethora of theories. Some have been proven, and others are just wild. With the end of the anime closing in, it’s time to take a look at past fan theories. How crazy were some of these theories, and were any of them true?

Three of the most popular fan theories forAttack on Titanseem to have left a big impact on the community. The first theory was about the secret of the basement and what Grisha was hiding from the world. At the beginning of the anime, some fans believed it had new technologies orthat Grisha was experimentingwith the titans. The second fan theory focuses on the titans; it was theorized that titans were made up of something unexpected. The final theory brings up the idea of time travel, which at this point doesn’t sound all that farfetched.

What’s in the Basement?

The biggest question from seasons 1-3 was what Grisha Yeager wanted to show Eren in the basement. Fans now know that Grisha was hiding books about the outside world, explaining his life as an Eldian in Marley and how he was part of a rebellion to save his people. This revolution set the stage for season four. Before this excellent reveal, fans had some impressive theories about what Grisha washiding in the basement.

Many of the theories revolved around Grisha having some sort of lab. Here he might have created a serum to turn Eren into the Attack Titan or even cure the Titans. Others thought Grisha might have been experimenting on Titans and testing what they could do. These theories aren’t impossible to believe because of Grisha’s occupation. It would have made sense for Grisha to try and cure the titans as a doctor. On the other hand, some fans theorized that Grisha was hiding superior technologies that held the truth about the titans.

Fans believed that Grisha Yeager was hiding larger-than-life secretswith all of these theories. This isn’t surprising since reaching the basement was the primary mission of Eren for the first three seasons. So much was riding on the basement that whatever was in the basement must match the importance of the secret, possibly making the truth a little disappointing in comparison to the theories.

Are titans Made of Yeast?

For a while, fans have speculated what titan bodies are made up of. It was later discovered that titans are made up of a particular gas and formed by Ymir at the pathways. Before this was revealed, some fans believed that titans were made up of yeast.Inside wall Sina, there is a yeast used to preserve food. It slows down the decay process, explaining why the human hosts do not die off when in titan form. Yeast also allows expansion without increasing mass and is more productive under UV lights. Similar to how the titans move more during the day and are weightless. Also, yeast produces large amounts of gas and heat like the titans.

Even though this fan theory isn’t wholly accurate, many fans still believe it. This is because theexplanation of what titans aremade up of wasn’t fully explained. It was addressed, but there is still room for more, so maybe the Titans are made up of gas and yeast.

Eren is a Time Traveller

The final fan theory is an interesting one and is sort of true. This fan theory argues that Eren is a mental time traveler, getting messages from the future. This is surprisingly accurate since the Attack Titan can see the memories of both the past and future users. This is why Eren Kruger knew the names of Armin and Mikasa before they were born. In theory, Eren already had the ability before he got the Attack Titan.

Fans who created this theory believe that when Eren woke up under the tree during the first episode, he had his first message from the future. This is why he woke up so suddenly, and it explains why the title of the episode is " To you, 2000 Years from Now,“which is a messageto those in the future or the past. Regardless of who the news is for, it’s evident that some type of time communication is happening. The theory continues speculating that Mikasa from the future is the one sending messages back to Eren and that it’s up to Eren to save humanity.

From the most recent Attack on Titan episode, fans now know that the message was from Ymir. She called out to Eren for help and was even released from her enslavement to the Eldians. Still, so much of this theory was correct. It goes to show how inventive and passionate fans are about this show. Many came up with fantastic and wild theories, like titans being made from yeast. If only their bodieswere similar to bread than gas, then maybe the people on Paradis wouldn’t have had to worry about starving during season one.
