Visit Markarth
Markarth is far to the east, past Dragon Bridge and Karthwasten. Players should expect tofight a dragon or two on the way there.Players may also encounter the Forsworn, a faction of natives to the region that use crude armor and weaponry.
When players first enter the stone walls of Markarth, they will immediately witness a murder in the marketplace. A man named Weylin will kill a woman named Margret in the name of the Forsworn as she is shopping for jewelry. The guards will slay him and tell theDragonborn to stay out of their way.

Players can save Margret from being killed if they act fast enough, and she will reward the Dragonborn with a silver emerald necklace. It will not drastically change the rest of the quest if she is saved, but players will not be able to pick up Margret’s key from her body if she is still alive (an item that will come in handy later). However, she can later be questioned about the attack in the market, and the player can always pickpocket the key.
Speak to Eltrys
Regardless of Margret’s fate, a man named Eltrys will speak to the Dragonborn after the attack, and will not-so-subtly place a note in the player’s inventory. Read the note and go tothe Shrine of Talosin the middle of the city to talk to Eltrys again. He believes there is something behind these Forsworn murders and needs help investigating. He gives the player a couple of objectives to follow up on.
Investigate Weylin
Weylin, the man who attacked Margret, lived in the Warrens down in lower Markarth, near the smelter. Speak to Garvey near the entrance for a speech check. Convince him or bribe him to get the key to Weylin’s room. If the speech checks fail and the Dragonborn does not have enough gold, the player can stillpick the lock on the door.
Weylin’s room is at the end of the hall on the right. Enter and loot the note from the chest to learn that someone named “N” put Weylin up to the attack in the market. The objective will update to find the identity of “N.”

Leave the Warrens, and a mercenary named Dryston will fistfight the Dragonborn. Beat him in hand-to-hand combat, and Dryston will reveal that he was hired by Nepos the Nose, revealing N’s identity. If players lose the fight, they can pickpocket a note off of Dryston when he enters the Warrens to guard Weylin’s room. They can also kill him and take the note if they choose to. The objective of investigating Nepos will be added.
Investigate Margret
Margret was stayingat the Silver-Blood Innnear the entrance to the city. If players have her key, they can simply walk down the hall to the left and open the door at the end. Players can also convince Kleppr or Hroki to give them the key or rent the room.
Margret’s diary is in a chest in the room. Pick it up to reveal that she was an Imperial spy. If she is still alive, she will be sitting by the fire, and the player can use a speech check to get her to admit to being a spy.

When players leave the inn they, will be confronted by Markarth guards, who will threaten the Dragonborn to stop their investigation. Return to Eltrys for a reward in gold before advancing to the next steps in the quest.
Speak to Thonar Silver-Blood
Thonar resides in the Treasury House. He owns the silver mines in the area and has political influence throughout the Reach. Speak to Riadha at the entrance and convince her to let the Dragonborn in to speak to Thonar. The player has a number of options when speaking to Thonar, but no matter which one they choose, Thonar will angrily tell the Dragonborn to leave.
When exiting the building, Thonar’s wife Betrid will die of poisoning, while Nana and Donnel attack. Defeat them, and Thonar will reveal he has a deal with the king of the Forsworn even though he has been imprisoned. Now that they’ve attacked his family, though, this deal is off.

An alternate method is pickpocketingThonar’s Journal and avoiding speaking to him. This will prevent his wife from dying, along with the surprise attack.
Confront Nepos
Go to Nepos' house to speak to him. His maid, Uaile, will stop the Dragonborn at the door, but Nepos will tell her to let them through. He will reveal that he follows the Forsworn king’s orders and carries out theattacks on the citizens of Markarth. Make sure to ask him for all the details to learn about Madanach, The Forsworn King.
After finishing the conversation, Nepos and the other Forsworn will attack the player. The Forsworn are strong and will attack using spells along with melee weapons. After defeating them, there is valuable loot in the house such as silver ingots and gold. Players can also loot Nepos' Journal from him to learn more.

Alternatively, players can also pickpocket Nepos' Journal and quickly exit the house to prevent the fight from happening.
Return to the Shrine
The final objective is returning to the shrine and speaking to Eltrys. However, it’s too late, and player will find his dead body at the foot of the shrine. A Markarth guard will tell the Dragonborn that they did not heed the warnings, and all the deaths in Markarth will be pinned on them.
The guard will tell the player they are bound for Cidhna Mine. Players can choose go quietly or to fight, though the latter will trigger several waves of Markarth guards. This willput a permanent bountyon the Dragonborn in the Reach. The only way to remove this bounty is by surrendering to the guards and beginning the No One Escapes Cidhna Mine Quest.
