Ahead of the theatrical release ofSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the movie’s cast responded to rumors stating that Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield will make cameos in the movie.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Versetakes place a year after the events ofSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. An unexpected, multi-versal visit from Gwen Stacy leads Miles Morales back through the multiverse where he meets the Spider Society, a group of Spider-People from different universes that protect the multiverse. While trying to save his fellow Spider-People fromthe universe-jumping villain the Spot, Miles makes a new enemy in the form of Miguel O’Hara, a distinctly humorless Spider-Man who disagrees with Miles' plan to defeat the Spot.

Following a 14-minuteSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Versepreviewat CinemaCon,Extrainterviewed Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Issa Rae. During the interview, the cast members were asked about their thoughts regarding rumors that Holland, Maguire, and Garfield were making cameos in the animated Spider-Man movie. The interviewer referenced a conversation with the movie’s co-director, saying, “I talked to Kemp [Powers] and he said that Tom and Andrew and Tobey are all making cameos.” The cast did not confirm nor deny the statement, with Steinfeld and Moore laughing the question off and Rae commenting, “Wow, look at you. You’re going for it.” When specifically asked for comments on the rumor, Moore said, “I know Hailee Steinfeld’s in it. Issa Rae is in it. Daniel Kaluuya. Jake Johnson.” Steinfeld’s statement was also vague. “There’s so many [Spider-People]. There [are] some treats. This wouldn’t be what it is if there weren’t some treats,” she said.
In the past, a movie including three actors who’ve previously played a character was unheard of. With most franchises, when a character is recast, the new actor is the new focus of the story, and the old actor - or actors - are not brought into play. Marvel has been changing that; betweenWandaVisionbringing in Evan Peters' QuicksilverandSpider-Man: No Way Homeuniting all three actors who’ve played Spider-Man in live-action movies, anything is possible.Spider-Man: No Way Homespecifically set a precedent for past actors showing up in future Spider-Man movies, as it brought multiple actors from all threeSpider-Manfranchises together in one movie - Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, to name a few.Spider-Man: No Way Homealso included a post-credits scene showing Tom Hardy’s Venom in Holland’s universe, explicitly linking Sony’s Spider-Man Universe to the MCU.
It remains unclear if Holland, Maguire, and/or Garfield will make cameos inSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. While the US trailer didn’t make such promises, theinternationalSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Versetrailerfeatured dialogue from Maguire, Garfield, and Holland. While the dialogue was from the movies they’ve already appeared in as Spider-Man, it’s an interesting choice to include them in the trailer if they’re not part of the movie. Since Sony’s Miles Morales and the MCU’s Peter Parker are having adventures concerning the multiverse, seeing a few live-action Spider-Men in the upcoming movie would not be surprising.
