Spider-Man: No Way Homehas been in theaters for roughly a month now, and it still continues to break numerous records. But besides its box office and critical success, one of the main goals, according to the film’s writers, was to give Tom Holland’s Peter Parker origin story a satisfying conclusion.
Unlike previousSpider-Maninstallments, what stands out with Holland’s films is that audiences are thrown into his story after he is bitten by the Spider (which is referred to in some scenes throughout theHomecomingtrilogy but not actually depicted on screen). Eveneverything that happens with his Uncle Benhas all taken place months before Holland’s version of the character is introduced.

Now, writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have recently spoken with The Wrap, as the duo delved deeper into why it was crucial to really develop a strong extended origin story for Holland’s Peter and explore his character in different ways. “I think we’re always trying to tell an organic story with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, knowing that we can’t be reliant on anything else other than he’s got to go his own way at the end of this movie, each movie, and not be reliant on something that we … God knows, I think it’s been incredible, we’ve been a part of this collaboration with Sony and Marvel Studios, and [Spider-Manproducers] Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige],” McKenna shared. While Sony producer Amy Pascal confirmed that Holland’s Spider-Man will befeatured in at least three moreSpider-Manfilms, McKenna and Sommers were only focused on closing outNo Way Home.
“If it ends here, great. If this is the end of this, if this is all about, ‘Oh, this was all …’ If you look backward and go, ‘This was an origin story that took place over three stories to get this Peter Parker to this place where he’s stripped-down, anonymous, has no billionaire benefactor, has been through the sacrifice of what it really means to have this power and what that responsibility that goes along with that is, and is now having to look for how to pay rent.’ I think that would be really satisfying, I think that’d be really cool,” McKenna further added.
Judging by the critical reception, it appears that McKenna and Sommers were able to deliver on a worthy conclusion, asSpider-Man: No Way Homehas a current scoreof 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest ranked MCU films to date. On top of its high scores and rankings, the film has some of the biggest and most welcoming surprises out of any Marvel film, which make it almost impossible for fans to root against.
