With the release ofSpider-Man: No Way Homejust around the corner, it seems like every actor gets asked the question of whether or not they’ll be returning to their old superhero roles. Now, Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson in the originalSpider-Mantrilogy, is the latest to address the possibility of returning to their role from the film, and it appears she’s open to the idea.
For those who don’t know, Mary Jane Watson is a love interest forSpider-Manin the Marvel comics. She is also one of the main characters inthe original Spider-Mantrilogyand becomes caught in the middle of a love triangle with Peter Parker and his best friend Harry Osborn.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly on her acting career, Dunst spoke about the idea of returning as Mary Jane Watson. In addition to starring in theSpider-Manfilms, Dunst had roles inJumanji,Little Women, andInterview with the Vampire.The fact that these films have all been remade or rebooted was not lost on Dunst. “It seems like a lot of movies I do get remade,” she said. “It’s like a running theme for me.”
The actress recalled her time working on the superhero comic films and talked about how the filmakers flew to Germany to audition her after beingsuggested as a possible lead by Tobey Maguire. While Dunst has shot down rumors that she will return as Mary Jane inSpider-Man: No Way Home, it appears she hasn’t ruled out a return to the genre. The actress said, “I wish they’d put me in another one. Like, old-girl Mary Jane — why not? I would do [another superhero movie]. Everybody else is!”
Superhero films are compared to westernsby many in terms of being the most popular movie genre of their respective eras. Many believe the hype will die down for superhero films, but they often incorporate a wide variety of genres, so not all of them are the same. WatchingBlack Pantheris not the same experience as watchingGuardians of the Galaxy.Since the genre is so expansive, a lot of talented people are getting involved in superhero films, including actors, screenwriters, directors, and producers.
If fans get to see Dunst in a superhero role again, then hopefully they’ll be able to see herreturn in anotherSpider-Manprojector short spin-off. Fans want to see if she and Peter got their happily ever after, especially after the events ofSpider-Man 3.Right now, fans should lower expectations on if they’ll see her in the upcomingSpider-Manfilm due to how much she had denied her appearance. Of course, anything is possible.
Spider-Man: No Way Homewill be in theaters on June 28, 2025.
