Summary

OneStar Wars Jedi: Survivorplayer’s impressive permadeath run was hit with a sudden and tragic end at the hands of a lowly Stormtrooper. The second installment of Respawn’sStar Wars Jediseries finally launched across current-gen consoles back in April and continued the story of former Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis as he fled from the forces of the Empire and searched for a new home for himself and his growing band of allies.Jedi: Survivorwas met with mostly positive reviews, and it was just announced that the game will becoming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox Oneafter skipping those consoles at first.

In the meantime, players who are already able to playStar Wars Jedi: Survivorhave been experimenting with the game’s Metroidvaina-style exploration and character customization options to come up with their own ways to enjoy the game. Some more dedicated players have even decided to perform special permadeath playthroughs, in which they are forced to restartJedi: Survivorover from the very beginning should Cal die once. This isn’t too different fromthe famous Nuzlocke rulesthat somePokemonfans follow, where trainers are required to release any Pokemon that faints in battle from their party as if it had actually died.

One such player is GOODGAME_ETHAN, whose recentStar Wars Jedi: Survivorplaythrough ended abruptly when Cal was seemingly killed by a Stormtrooper mid-jump. This incident took place during the build-up to Cal’s confrontation withJedi: Survivor’s fallen Jedi Dagan Geraat the Koboh Observatory at about the midway point of the game. To make matters even more frustrating for GOODGAME_ETHAN, this death came after grinding to unlock all of Cal’s special abilities in the opening stage on Coruscant while playing on the game’s highest difficulty. A clip of GOODGAME_ETHAN’s misfortune can be seen on r/StarWarsJediSurvivor.

However, a bit of controversy soon erupted in the comments section of GOODGAME_ETHAN’s post about whether the fall counts as a true death. Some users argued that since Cal only takes fall damage instead of dying outright during a missed jump inJedi: Survivor, it shouldn’t have counted and GOODGAME_ETHAN could have continued his run. Others argue that Cal still technically respawns, so it counts as a death. At the very least, GOODGAME_ETHAN considers it a death, and even pointed out that such a fall would have counted in most video games.

While many of the Reddit users who responded to GOODGAME_ETHAN’s post seem to disagree with their decision to count Cal’s fall as a true death, the fact remains thatthis was a self-imposed permadeath challenge, so the rules of what constitutes a “game over” are ultimately up to the player themselves. In any case, doing permadeath runs on games likeStar Wars Jedi: Survivoris an interesting way to spice things up on a second playthrough, especially during the long wait forJedi: Survivor’s eventual sequel.
