Star Wars Outlawshas been officially unveiled by Ubisoft, and the upcoming third-person action-adventure title is poised to bring an underappreciated side of theStar Warsgalaxy to the forefront. Focusing on the scoundrel Kay Vess,Star Wars Outlawsseems to be paying homage to the legacy of the iconic smuggler Han Solo. Piloting her own ship and running with other criminals just like her inspiration, Kay’s blaster is a far cry from a lightsaber. Fans know that Han Solo is simply incomplete without his hairy sidekick Chewbacca, a dynamic that hasn’t been lost with the introduction of Kay and her own companion named Nix.

One of the core aspects that was displayed during both the premiere trailer andgameplay showcase forStar Wars Outlawsis the relationship between Kay and Nix. Simply assisting Kay in stealing valuable cargo during cinematics initially, Nix could have been mistaken for nothing more than a cute mascot of the game. When navigating out of the Pyke Syndicate chop shop, however, Kay ends up being aided by Nix in actual gameplay. Yoda has never been a companion that players could have on their back who aids them in gameplay, but he and Nix do share a comparable trait relative to their unknown species histories.

Nix Introduces the Merqaal Race to Star Wars

While the gameplay elements and connection to the protagonist associated with Nix seem to be clear, the same cannot be said for the origin of this creature. The first ever sighting of a new, rare, and previously unknown species called the Merqaal, is it actually unknown what planet Nix originates from. Resembling nothing else in the galaxy,Nix’s unique physiologyand seemingly intelligent nature accomplish the impressive feat of making him a truly unique alien among the creatures ofStar Wars. There may be no other Merqaals known yet, but Nix’s background can’t help but evoke a similarly diminutive character of the classic franchise.

Originally introduced inThe Empire Strikes Back,Master Yodahas long since cemented himself as one of the memorable characters in not only the history of his series but pop culture as a whole. Serving as the Jedi Master to Luke Skywalker, Yoda has long since defied his small stature through what he is capable of. Having served as a member of the Jedi Council with a hand in training nearly every Jedi in the galaxy during his 800+ years as a master to countless students. Despite his dignified qualifications, though, Yoda also has some uncanny similarities to Kay’s companion, Nix.

Master Yoda and Nix Both Originate from Unknown Homeworlds

While Nix may be a quadruped seemingly incapable of speech and Yoda stands proud as he delivers words of wisdom, origins draw parallels between these supporting characters. While Nix is a member of the mysterious Merqaal race that has an unknown home planet, Yoda matches his ambiguity by being a member of a race that doesn’t even have a name.

“Yoda’s race”, as it is called inStar Warscanon, comes from a complete mystery of a home planet in the exact same manner as Nix. Due to this obscurity, very few members ofYoda’s home planet and racehave been seen throughout the history ofStar Wars, which is a fate that Nix’s species is likely to mirror. Regardless, the parallel origin stories of these two smaller creatures are simply undeniable as few races in theStar Warsgalaxy are treated with so much mystique.

WithGrogu ofThe Mandalorian, better known as Baby Yoda, showing an adorable quality to the species heavily reminiscent of Nix’s charm, these connections may have been more intentional than they seem. The mysterious history of Nix’s species could remain just as unexplored as Yoda’s, but fans will have to wait untilStar Wars Outlawsreleases next year to learn the truth.
