Stardew Valleyis all about gentle progression,as players grow crops, make friends, and discover the secrets of Pelican Town. The game begins with the player inheriting their grandfather’s farm in the titularStardew Valley. Unfortunately, the farm is in a pretty poor state to begin with, and a lot of hard work is necessary to improve it.
One of the biggest goals for most players inStardew Valleywill be restoring the farmhouse itself, which begins as a single room. However, building up the farmhouse and adding new rooms and features can be very expensive, so it’s a good idea to plan the upgrades in advance.
Updated on August 06, 2025, by Anastasia Maillot:The 1.6 update to Stardew Valleybrought in a bunch of new house renovations that let players spice up their indoor living in the game. From now having an attic to additional space expansion of existing rooms and even a dining room, the new options are perfect for players who have some money to spend and enjoy decorating their farmhouse. With new content comes new pricing as well, with renovations now costing quite a bit of money. Existing house upgrades have also seen some price changes, so farmers will need to budget accordingly going forward.
Where to Upgrade the Farmhouse
Unlike many ofStardew Valley’s features, upgrading the farmhouse is available right from the start of the game. To get started,head to the Carpenter’s Shop atRobinand Demetrius' house,which can be found in the Mountain area north of Pelican Town.
Robin is the town carpenter, andher shop is open from 9 am to 5 pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. It closes an hour early on Friday and is only open on Tuesday if it’s raining. Speak to Robin at the counter to check the list of upgrades and renovations that are available for the farmhouse.
How to Upgrade the Farmhouse
There are three basic upgrades for the farm inStardew Valley, each more expensive than the last, as well as a series of renovations that are only available once players have a fully upgraded farmhouse. Keep in mind thatas of 1.6, most of the renovations will now cost money, except for the Remove Crib one. Players can also move their farmhouse elsewhereon their land, and paint the building according to a few color options.

Adds two new rooms, including one with children’s beds and a crib (players can now have children). Also enlarges the bedroom and kitchen.

Robin will take three days to construct each of the basic house upgrades, though players are still free to use the house as normal while she is working. Therenovations are completed instantly, and, unlike the basic upgrades, can be reversed by going back to Robin’s shop. The Pelican Town carpenter can also be used to construct a variety of outbuildings, allowing players to keepanimals inStardew Valley.
